Hello everyone... My pc crt just sh*t the bed.. and I have been thinking about getting a higher quality 17" lcd... i originally was going to go samsung, untill I saw the NEC 70gx2.. silver, dvi, better specs. and I actually heard that NEC/Mitsubishi manufactures the screens for lacie... both NEC and Lacies 21" screens are identical. I was wondering if this quality would be present in the 17" 70gx2.. its a 350$ 17" so I would hope that the quality is superior to the 220$ samsung... And I know this sounds silly but the NEC matches my powerbook for when I feel I need a second canvaas. You Guys know anything about/ever use NEC'S? any info would be appreciated! basiaclly I just want a high quality screen more geared twords graphics.

the spec of the nec are (off the top of my head)
700:1 contrast
pixel pitch 0.264
400cd/2 brightness
4ms

wow, 4ms i think thats more a gaming spec. Not really necessary unless you are doing video stuff.

Wrong link. Looks like Dell took the 20" widescreen off their featured products sale.

Still, for $529 it's a damned nice monitor. If you look around, you can often find it in the $420-$440 range.

I've never had an NEC LCD monitor, but I've had lots of NEC CRT monitors in the past. NEC as a brand is great, but that's all I'm qualified to say.

I agree with the Dell LCD's.

thanks guys I think im gonna go with the NEC.. would you rather go with a 17 with a pixel pitch of .264 or a 19 in with a pixel pitch of .294... I think that i would rather have tighter pixels than more screen space, but i really dont know.. can u even notice a difference between .264 and .294?

Jriddim, if you're a designer nowadays, I really fail to see the reason to go with a square monitor. I know you mentioned that you have a PB, but have you used any of the 20" widescreens available now?

It's close to having a dual 17" (square) LCD setup except even nicer because it's all one monitor.

If at all possible, shop the Dell around. They constantly put them on sale so I bet you can eBay one for around $400-450. To boot it uses the same screen as the Apple Cinema Display priced at $800. Two of my friends have purchased that model and it's a GREAT monitor.

No offense but paying $350 for a square 17" is kinda silly IMO unless you absolutely need the 4ms response time (gaming would be my only reason but even the Dell's response time is good enough for gaming, both my friends who bought it are hardcore gamers).

If you're set on the NEC, so be it but I'd shop around more. Check sites like:

http://www.arstechnica.com
http://www.anandtech.com
http://www.tomshardware.com
http://www.hardocp.com

And if you have display questions, go here:

http://www.hardforum.com

There are LOADS of quality information on those sites though it may take a bit of time to search through the other hardware reviews. I'd personally stay away from CNET and some of the really big tech sites because they're pretty heavily indebted to the manufacturers. All the sites I listed are honest and to the point, but are very well-known in the tech community.

Heh, in case you can't tell I spend about 2 hours a day browsing tech information.

PS. Stay away from any tech sites that are Apple only. They can't get off Jobs' nuts long enough to give a balanced review (and I'm a dedicated Apple nut with four Apple computers currently running).

HAHAHAHA. Rocketpig, Thanks alot you do make me want to shop around more.. I really do want widescreen. and the only game I would be playing is NBA jam TE on my sega emulator so i dont really have to worry about crazy fast response times... I mean I do get crazy fast on the 3 pointers but other than that I just want beautiful deep color and sharp images/text.. and a silver cabnet would be awesome bu I think that asking too much. But Thanks so much for your input and im going to search those sites prolly untill 4am!!! thanks again! Oh yeah and i really need to keep it under 350$ thats the only problem

No problem, I'll check a few sites and see if I can find some reviews for monitors under $350.

BTW Jriddim, do you use Mac or PC? Some of the options I'm looking at influence that (display settings, sleep, etc).

Ugh, I am striking out on who makes the iMac 17" monitor. I can't find the info anywhere. It's a good screen though the viewing angle ain't all that. But since most people sit in FRONT of their monitor, I generally don't worry about viewing angle that much.

All the decent 17" widescreen monitors I'm searching are square. I can't find a decent 17" widescreen for design (though I know my iMac's is good, just wish I could find the manufacturer).

Thanks Balou but I'm typing this on a 17" iMac... I checked the same profile.

Though since I'm running an Intel iMac, my video card is FAR superior to yours.

Though since I'm running an Intel Mac, my copy of Photoshop runs at HALF the speed of yours.

:D

Damn you, Adobe! Release a Universal Binary!

Hmmm See It is "supposed" to be for my pc cause my crt just crapped out... but I really want to run dual screens with my powerbook. So I guess I would need mac and pc. would it be dumb to switch off mac/pc when dual screens is needed? all id have to do is unplug the dvi so I wouldnt even need to move the monitor to go from mac to pc. would this hurt the monitor overtime you think?

Actually since your iMac is PPC powered, it's actually faster.

Slower processing on the newer iMac then? What's the advantage other than graphics card?

I'm not wise to the technical terminology and inner workings obviously.
