thanks... just got back. i think it went well, except i didn't finish the test they gave me. are you not meant ot finish? seemed like you'd have to be awful fast to get it all done. anyway, i'm going back tomorrow to talk to more people. i'm running out of clothes to wear to all these interviews they're giving me. guess i can't complain, though!

I dunno...it depends on the test. I'm sure it would've been better had you finished...but the thing is if you were to get the job, you'd be just as fast as anyone else once you were comfortable with everything. If not, just learn from it...no biggie.

I hate those test... proves NOTHING. then why bother bring a portfolio or have references. your in a unfamiliar place on an unfamiliar system and network. you can't judge what soemone can do in an hour on one job. It's a waste of time and frankly a little demeaning.

yeah, i see what you're saying. they had me using Creator, which i've never touched. felt like quark, though. i had to recreate an ad, and there were a bunch of links and i didn't know what was what. that was just one part. i also had two written parts which i finished. then there were a couple of things to do in photoshop, but i didn't get to them. i walked out of that part of the interview feeling a little short changed, but i think things went well in the second part. thanks for the support everyone, i love this forum!

may i ask what the test consisted of? i too am looking for a job( a recent grad.) i am curious as to what to expect on an interview.......any help
snypa
06-24-2004, 02:22 AM
the written parts were mostly related to printing and basic terminology
for the second part i had to duplicate a printed ad they gave me. i started with a blank document and a folder full of links (most of which i didn't need)
then i had to color correct two photos in photoshop
create and save a path around a specific object-photoshop
then recreate the ad i duplicated, however i wanted.
i was given 30 or 45 minutes (cant remember) to do this. good luck in the job search!

Daaayyyy-um! I don't think even the people that work there could have done all that in the time given. Maybe if the ad was small space, but even still. The path thing alone should take about that long to get right, depending how complicated the object was.

It's asinine to expect anyone new, fresh off the street to do that. Even a seasoned pro. Plus even if someone whipped it together doesn't mean they are the better person for the job. that is the point of a portfolio and references.

the object was pretty simple. i think that would've been the easiest part, but it still would take a nice chunk of time.

i cant believe they wanted you to do ALL THAT in 1/2hr - 45mins. wow..

looking back, i'm starting to think that they wanted to see how i'd react to the new software. it was clear from the beginning that they didn't really expect anyone to be experienced with it. maybe they wanted to see if i'd suck it up and do my best or just complain about not ever using it before. that's about the only thing i could imagine they were looking at, besides my answers on the written part.

Tests like that blow. A better way to do it is to assign a take-home. Let the designer work in a comfortable environment, and give them a decent amount of time. Good luck, snypa.

Cool test. But any job that involes Multi-Ad Creator and them testing you to see how fast you are...sounds like....GRUNT JOB... you'll be pounding out stuff like crazy..
D-Zine
06-25-2004, 06:50 AM
Is this a job with a newspaper or something?
Yep....honestly Key is right. If they got you using Multi-Ad Creator, be prepared to punch out 20-40 ads per DAY. No lie, you gotta be fast! Trust me, I know..been there 5 years! It IS a grunt job, but if it's your first, take it bc you can learn alot if you ask questions! Just KNOW WHEN TO MOVE ON!!! I started out with my first job being an ad design job - actually at the place I am at now. I interviewd....they gave me a Creator book to take home before I started and I never touched it. The program is INCREDIBLY EASY and its made that way so you can punch those ads out - its made for the newspaper biz. I wouldn't dare do REAL GD with it - just doesn't have the capabilities of Illus or whatever, but I wouldn't punch out 20-40 ads a day if I had to use Illus or Quark to do them in either and I'm fast with Quark so...
When I say 'know when to move on' I just mean learn what you can there if you get and take the job, but leave when you feel like you have gotten the experience you need there. I left after a year....worked a few other places, 2 magazines, a print shop...and then came back to this place (long story). Not as an ad designer tho. Now I am kinda the Jill of all Trades. Meaning I am the art director, production manager, office manager and techy all rolled into ONE with crappy pay - Ahhh haha (not REALLY funny..heh). I really have learned alot about printing at this job though and how to form a great relationship with my printer and to me that is an extremely important part of being a GDer. But - now I feel stuck at my job. Comfortable but not much creativity and it sucks! So when yer ready to leave and find something better - DO IT! ;o)
PS - lol.....Gaawwwd I HATE when they wanna test you on software...WTF??? What version of Creator was it anyways? Just curious?!

i'm sure you're right, Keyare. hopefully i get the second job i interviewed for at this company. looks like i'd be responsible for the entire layout of several smaller publications. they gave me a test, too. but this was a take home. i had to redesign a feature article. that went much better. they said they'd make the decision within a week or so. i'll definitely keep y'all posted on this.

sorry, D. didn't read your post until i posted the last one. yes, a newspaper. would be my first 'pro' job. i've been a student designer for the past 2 yrs. responsible for everything we put out. agree with what you said about developing a good relationship with my printer. probably the most important thing. not sure what version of creator. sounds like the exact same job you had. thanks for the great advice!
