Stick with Canon or Nikon. I'm a Canon user. Canon just released its new 30D you might want to look into.

Also check out the new Rebel XT. A little less than the 30D and you can put the extra money towards a high-quality lens. Depends on your use and needs.

I have been researching cameras for the past few months in the same price range. Even though I can use my older Nikon lenses, I've decided to replace everything with Canon. I even picked up a Canon S80 point and shoot. Really Wow shots for a PNS
In a nutshell:
RebelXT - too small for my hands so I wrote it off. I heard though that the Rebel will only take the lower end lenses, but I have not confirmed that.
Canon 10D - quietest shutter I found, MP's too low though
Canon 20D - Good all around Camera, 8MP (As low as I will go) But it includes a flash and will accept Canon's higher end lenses
Canon 30D - My Opinion, a bunch of hype. Some improvements over the 20D, but not worth the price. Will make the 20D drop some....
Canon 5D - I like the MP's size. No Built in Flash, Just out of my price range with replacing lenses. Probably a future camera for me.
Canon 1's - Just too darn expensive....

Check out dpreview.com to start your search....

Hope this helps

the 20D for your price range is hands down the best camera for your dollar. I'm not sure if you area actually a "photographer" or someone just looking to get into it. Either way, though the 20D is great, I'd reccomend getting the 10D and put some money into lenses... the better the glass the better the shot

thanks guys, narrows the search down a bit, i'll look into the range, by the sounds of it the 10d and good lens is a fav.

to answer, im a GD not a photoagraher but need a relatively decent camera to have at the end of the desk for emergency use.

yeah, I am also not a photographer, though I enjoy it as a hobby. I got an old Digital Rebel (6.3 MP) for $500 a year ago and have loved the canon quality. I'll probably upgrade someday, but I have a lot to learn.

thats great info, with the exchange rate your $500 works out to be around £750 or so, would be interesting to see the cost of those models here.

will find out and post the info

I'm a Nikon fan - the D70 is an oh-so-nice camera with all the bells and whistles. The up and coming D200 has wifi which would be killer for a digital studio - no wires to trip on, and the cam can stay in the tripod mount. The Canon 20d is a good camera, too, and cheaper than the 30d for nearly the same feature set. I'd wait about 6 months if you can. we're sure to see some pretty serious price drops on that gear once the 30D becomes mainstream. If you want a really nice point and shoot (I use it far more than the Dslr) look into the Nikon P2 and P1 compacts - my only complaint with them is barrel distortion, but they take crystal clear shots and the P1 is 8MP effective.
