New to these forums, so be gentle :)

I usually post this kind of stuff over at MacObserver.com, but there haven't been enough designers arounds lately. Thought I'd hang with you guys awhile.

On to my dilemma:

I currently rely on an old OS9 app called Entable to create all of the tables in the RPG books I design. I would love to get rid of it and find something new and OSX compatible to do what it can, but I have had no luck so far.

The tables I create are all styled the same way but their content varies wildly as far as number of rows, number of columns, width and height of cells, etc. Entables biggest advantage is its style sheets. A single stylesheet can contain all of the typestyle information as well as the cell attributes. For instance, all of my header rows have a black background, center justification, and white 8pt Futura Bold text. In Entable I can set this as a single style and apply all that info to a new row with a single click; useful since I sometimes have to create over 100 tables for a given book. Also a tables width or height can be fixed, so resizing columns or rows will not change the size of the table; useful for keeping it in a certain column space in a page. Tables can also run across multiple pages.

Entable never made it to version 2 - it was discontinued in favor of TableWorks abut a year after it came out.

I've tried the built in table editors in Xpress 6.5 and InDesign CS and they lack nearly all of the features that entable has. Anybody have any ideas on something that could work like this? I wish I knew how to write a program as I'd try and build it myself.

I'm stumped. Thanks.

Welcome Flip!

I thought I read through your whole post, maybe I just missed the reason why you haven't looked for this but... if you say they disconinued Entable for TableWorks, why not look for an updated version of that?

I really dont know either of these programs, just a logical guess?!

Heh. Well I tried TableWorks last year, but for the life of me I can't remember why I didn't adopt it. I think it was because of the lack of style sheets, but I don't know.

Hmmm.. better go download the demo again and try it out :)

I did a quick search for Indesign plugins and found this (http://indesign.pluginsworld.com/plugin.php?directory=adobe&software=indesign&plugin=754&plug=tablestylesandcellstylespro). I'm not sure if it'll do what you want. You may want to just search for plug ins and read through them or download trials and see if any of them do what you need. Good luck.

Yep. Tried that one. It was incredibly slow, and was very difficult to accurately determine column and cell dimensions. I haven't delved into the plug-in/xtension market too much.

I'm still doing my book production in Xpress. While I love InDesign it's just been too slow with large documents on my older hardware: (G4 Dual450; 1.5GB RAM; 32MB Nvidia card/16MB PCI card; two monitors)

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming.

Flip:

How is "TableWorks" working out? I might need to do some major table work in the near future and would like to start getting familar with a good Table application.

Thanks!

I'm afraid I messed up the name of the software I had tried. Tableworks is actually defunct. The thing I had tried recently was TableMaker, an Xpress xtension from GLUON software: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/4378

I haven't been able to reinstall the demo yet (it keeps saying it has expired), maybe I'll try it at work tomorrow. I'll read up on the PDF manual though and see if I can recall the issues I had with it.

Sorry about the confusion
