Big-Time graphic designers?

Can anyone give me prominent names in the field of graphic design? Within the last 50 years, particularly someone contemporary and still alive/working. I am a student and I really don't know a lot of names, we don't have a graphic design history course here. I'm looking maybe, if possible, someone who does simple and elegant designs. Thanks.

Gosh - just go to your local library and pick up the first book or magazine on design would be your best bet. My faves include neville brody, Carson, sSaville.
