Use "The-Font-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named" very heavily.

Always emboss your dropshadowed text.

in all seriousness...avoid trends, trends suck! do you honestly want to look like everyone else, anyone can follow a trend the real heart and soul of a project is concept. If your concept fits within a trend, joy! but dont force a trend onto your project

Pretty much read everything on the first page, and don't do those. Avoid copying other styles so much as defining your own. Why hire a mouse jockey when you can hire a designer.

Dude as drorain said. You can't get a better answer then that to your question.

You'll find some decent tutorials on worth1000.com, but you know a quick google search won't harm the cause. I tend to use tutorials to see the software's potential rather then to develope my style. It's worth remembering every other designer wannabe (and actual designer) out there has probably seen or done that tutorial too. This is also the reason why i'd (a personal thing) rather not put tutorial work in my portfolio. Though there is no harm in doing a tutorial, then adapting those new found skills to an individual piece of work.

Getting your hands on a monthly design mag is always a good move too. Try Computer arts project (Future publishing) that is crammed full of inspirational designers and some decent tutorials too.
