hi, i'm from india and im pursuing a course in graphic design from NID (eames institute), ahmedabad. i am researching on the use of complementary colours in logos and logotypes. I have a few questions to ask here:
1. What kind of companies use complementaries in their logos?
2. Why are complementary colours used in logos?
3. What are the kind of people that these companies are trying to target?
4. which are these companies? And why/why not do their logos work?
If you could throw some light on the above mentioned questions it would be very helpful. Thanks.

Sounds like a school project.
You really need to do some research. Try a site that shows logos of various companies.

As for using complimentary colors, once you know the definition, you'll see the answers.

As for working/not working...who's to say.

Well good luck on the paper. To begin, why not start from the Logo of windows, have you ever taken a closer look at it? Its made of the 3 primary colours of TV media (R,G,B). Also to look for primary colours of print media, look at some design companies that uses the registration mark or the CMYK, in the end the use of the primary colours is to advertise simplicity in choice. Hope this helps.

Uh, last I looked, Microsoft had red blue green and yellow. Only red and green are complimentary there. CMYK is a whole different color wheel, they are not primary colors.

I'm guessing by now that paper is turned in...
