can someone please explain what a podcast is and how it is used...im totally clueless on this stuff
A podcast is just an audio or video clip that you download from the internets. Sort of the web equivalent of cable-access television. I subscribe to podcasts with my itunes, you can search for podcasts and there's a shiny button that says "subscribe" if you like it, then it automatically downloads each new "episode". Then you just play it like any other .mp3 or video clip when you're ready to listen to it. And stuff.

iTunes has a great selection.
I subscribe to One Minute Photoshop Tips, The Onion Radio News and Strong Bad Emails & More - among others.

If you subscribe, iTunes will download them to your iTunes libaray. There will be an podcasts icon in source menu to the left. You have to be online for updates to occur. And I'm pretty sure online and itunes open to receive updates. I don't know how to create podcast but I'm sure there's tons of info out there.
What would your podcast be about?

ipod is just marketing speak for a stadardized XML feed - at the base it's just a structured list of song files that exist on a server. just google podcast and you'll see how to use them. code-wise it looks something like:
//file headers
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
<rss version="2.0">

Channel Frederator is possibly the coolest podcast of the bunch. It features a collection of animated shorts by independent studios and animators. It has bumpers inbetween, a lot like Adult Swim. It's all just packaged very well. Designers will certainly appreciate it.

i like any pod cast that has Franklin McMan, he has a really good voice that doesn't bore you to death... plus he's got some great advice, especially if your job gets you to wits end on a normal basis... Media Artist Secrets is the name of one of his...
also Photoshop TV is cool.... speaking of that, i just ran into scott kelby a few weeks ago at chilies.

Adam Curry used to have one called "Podfinder" or something like that. It was updated weekly and gave you a tour of new and upcoming podcasts. I listen to podcasts from contemporary/emergent churches all over the country. It's amazing how far away from the boring, wooden services I grew up with that things have progressed. Somehow, somewhere someone got the idea that church should actually present something that may be relevant to the lives of those in the congregation, instead of a middle-of-the-road, keep up with the Jones's country club.
As for making your own, there's a "submit a podcast" link within the podcast section of the music store on itunes. All you have to have, as far as I know, is a website to host your cast (as well as some of the technical mumbo-jumbo orkaknos12 was talking about) and itunes will provide it for free download to the masses. I'm told that if you get mad popular in the podcasting world, you should probably put a bandwidth limit on your site, or you may end up owing THOUSANDS of $$ for the enjoyment of your adoring fans.
good luck, D-Frag!
Silence, I met Scott Kelby at the last two MacDesign conferences. He's a great guy, huh?
