Hi,
Im starting my first year in graphic design in august and just had a general question. What would they expect me to already know?
Should i do any type of research or practise before classes start?

First year in a 4 year college?
You'll be lucky to get an art course at all.
Core courses usually all that are available to incoming Freshmen.
Maybe one or possibly two Level 1 drawing or intro classes.
Depends on the college.
If you have any skills now, you'll probably be ahead of the game.

Well, you've got the whole summer to work on getting used to using a sketchbook. You can do some drawing on your own, maybe take a painting class or something at a community center in your town. Getting used to all of the traditional media is fun and cheap. Chances are it may put you ahead of others since people have tended to concentrate on the digital areas more lately. You can never go wrong in this profession knowing the use of as many creative materials and tools as possible. Rely on the school for all of the software and computer instruction you need (if you don't have the stuff already); that's what you're paying for.
Hope you like it.
