Today I broke my garden up into beds and planted carrots, radishes, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, cucmbers and radishes. I am also going to plant corn and potatoes a little further into the season.

For flowers, we have pansies, marigolds, gladiolas, grape hyacinths, sunflowers and roses. So far.

Anybody else enjoy gardening? What do you grow?

this is that annoying weather when you never know how you should dress. It's hot in the day, cool at night. Cold out by my folk's house *where I just left from* and will be warm in the city when I get home.

It was in the low 60s here, but I still wore long sleeves and pants. Not only does it keep me warm enough while I'm playing in the dirt, but also keeps my super-pasty skin from getting sunburned AND keeps the ants off me.

i had a friend who used to garden alot but it was all indoors. He had this cool setup with big heaters and all these tubes and stuff. He kept that place locked up real tight. I wonder what he was growing?

I'll post photos. You ought to consider a nice window basket for herbs/radishes/carrots/lettuce or even flowers. Very low maintenance, but still rewarding! :)

Well, we were having beautiful weather this week, until this morning when it just dumped a whole flurry of snow! Ack! Still warm, but what a surprise that was...

hooray for spring indeed.
If I had a yard I'd probably grow something in it, but I don't so I can't

It was 80 degrees on Thursday and Friday (!?!), Saturday was awesome for a while, yesterday was a dreary mess, windy and cold. As long as it's not snowing and not 90 plus degrees with nasty humidity, I'm fine.

It was about 70 yesterday, but now its 40 (and feels like 30) (http://www.weather.com/outlook/homeandgarden/home/local/84118?lswe=84118&lwsa=Weather36HourHomeCommand&from=whatwhere) and we might see snow. *sigh*

I'm with you reuber. Once we reach 90 with the super humidity, I'm down for the count. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

I will say this, though, and call me crazy, but I would much rather deal with insane heat than severe cold. Everyone I hear saying it's better the other way around always says "You can always put on more clothes!" and "You can only take off so many clothes!" which is a sound argument, until you actually think about it. I don't want to have to layer on so many clothes that I suddenly look like the Michelin Man, simply to grab the mail or scrape the frost off my car. With severe heat you get discomfort, but with severe cold you get pain. To avoid the pain of sunlight (which is far less severe than freezing wind anyway), just get in a shadow; hell, even in skyscraper-less Iowa, that is not a difficult feat.

I don't plant much in the way of edible things but I love the flower beds I put in around the house. I usually plant pansies, in the front and I have the most beautiful 8-10 foot rododendruns in the back and on the side of the house and a few rose bushes in front one red re one purple and one yellow. I will probobly plant my pansies this coming weekend.

Navian, you guys make damn sure that stuff stays there. We got lucky from the onslaught of snow you had last time. Barely missed us.

I cant help it, its headed your way. Your going to have a chat with Mother Nature about that one, I dont control the weather switches. (Wish I did)

Hmm, I checked our 7 day forecast. Just thunderstorms and clouds. Supposed to be 60s throughout the week. So it may head our way, but it ain't gonna do much.

Yeah I think the Rockies will clean the clouds out before you get it. Like you said, more rain than snow. But then again, Kool and I are at about 3,000'-4,000' above sea level. Wierder things happen when your at a higher elevation.

Oh well, I'm sure we'll get a few tornadoes here and there in the middle of the night. Speaking of which, I saw the newspaper's pics of some of the student apartments for University of Iowa...they got hit pretty damn hard. I know I've said this before, but we certainly were lucky.

Its alright, everyone else will feel the wrath of the snow.

Its called: spring runoff. Feel the wrath of the swelling rivers! :D

04-17-2006, 07:55 PM
Nah, I've got nothing to worry about there. Even though we're right along the river, it's a pretty steep drop from the edge to the river. During the nasty flood disaster of 92 or 93 or whatever year that was, we were all but unaffected. Yeah, the water level rose like a sunnuvabeotch, none of it got into town. The further south you go, though, yeah then you're in trouble.

Speaking of floods, it reminded me of the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996.

Back home (portland) there was a flood that turned out really bad (Jeff might know/remember about this one).

From Feb. 06-08 the Willamette River rose:

Salem: 36.5 feet (flood stage = 25 feet)
Portland: 29 feet (one foot lower than earlier forecast)
Oregon City: 44.5 feet
Albany: 31 feet

(More info (http://zebu.uoregon.edu/1996/es202/flood.html))

My mom was working in a resturaunt (in Oregon City) that was totaly submerged in less than 1 day.

I got out of school very early to go help sand bag. Boy was it a mess. the Willamette Falls (40' tall falls) was nothing, it was totaly submerged..

It was nasty.

The highest it has gotten here in SLC Utah, since 2002 (since I moved here) was almost 120°F. But the CFO here said one 4th of July he was on his way with his family to the 4th of july parade, and it snowed. Go figure.

I do remember the numbers though. Most of my family was involved in the sandbagging and my mom lost her job at the resturaunt she was working at that was totaly submerged (15 feet under the water surface). its just one of those things that leaves an imprint in your mind. I also remember small facts like the height of the Willamete River Falls. (I was born in Oregon City)

it's not too bad, it actually just looks a little swollen. And I had a tetanus shot just about 2 or 3 years ago, so my doctor isn't worried.

Doesn't seem fair, does it? You get stabbed with something, so the doctor wants to stab you again! Ack, shots. <shudder>

sorry navian, in 2002 we tied the the record of 107 set back in 1960...120 is death valley kind of heat...ugh!...think cool thoughts, but not snow!...lol

Ah, spring! My favorite time of year!

[BREAKS INTO SONG]

Spring is here, spring is here
Life is skittles, and life is beer
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring
I do, don't you? 'Course you do!

But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me
And makes every Sunday a treat for me...

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park!
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me
As we poison the pigeons in the park

When they see us coming
The birdies all try and hide
But they still go for peanuts
When coated with cyanide!

The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park!

We've gained notoriety
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society with our games

They call it impiety
And lack of propriety
And quite a variety of unpleasant names

But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon

So if Sunday you're free
Why don't you come with me
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park!

And maybe we'll do in
A squirrel of two
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park

We'll murder them all in laughter and merriment
Except for the few we take home to experiment

My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strych'n'
We feed to a pigeon
It just takes a smidgeon
To poison a pigeon in the park!

Lyrics by Tom Lehrer. No, I'm not sick enough to write anything this twisted myself!

All this talk of snow and "heat" (80's) makes me laugh. It's 96 here at the moment in Dallas.People who don't think it gets hot in Iowa have never been to Iowa or other midwesternish places during the summer, or at least were lucky enough to dodge the extremely nasty days. And although this isn't HOT heat right now, it does get into the 100s here, and after a winter with temps in the 30 belows, it sure as hell feels hot.
