Depends. If you want your sentence to be read correctly in Japanese, then nope, there is no way you can have a font do the translation for you.

Translation by font never works.

However if you just want to use the Japanese characters then its fine. Just make sure you find out what it says first, you might be sending the wrong message.

Example: If your sentence says: Happy Holidays. but in translation your sentence could be something like: Your father has the face of a donkies butt cheak.

Don't think that translating any language is easy as using a different font face.

The American Sign Language font, and the english alphabet is the same (Galladette), I believe this is the only case where you can use as a semi-translating device..

If you have a Mac the built in translation feature works sort of; it's the Translation Widget in Tiger. It's a start at least, but you should have someone who can read Japanese check it. This assumes you have the default Japanese fonts installed. I think you can use it to create the Japanses in Kanji, the traditional ideograms, or Katakana, which I think is the phonetic alphabet.

First of all, you need a professional translator, languages are totally different , they express the culture of a nation. Specially for Japanese, or Mandarin, etc. Don't pick a character, ask a translator.

I highly recommend you to use a double byte font (times New Roman or Tahoma for example) your translator needs to use those fonts..then you can insert the text into the final layout.
When you have the text in Illustrator, then you can change it for the font you want.

BTW.. FlipFriddle (http://member.php?u=9356) Japanese doesn't have a fonetic alphabet, it is actually called a system of syllables (Hiragana and Katakana).
