Be nice to your Printer Account Rep. Send them good files, and treat them like people and they will be nice to you. Ask them questions to make sure you send them good files. Don't ask for rediculous turn arounds when you don't need them because the time you do need it and ask for it they will tell you to piss off.

We have been dealing with a lady for about a year and a half and she is great. Whenever I go in to check out a proof we usually spend about a half hour talking about our bosses and the state of the industry.

She fills me in on the printing business, and even give me a heads up on what other designers charge. She has even hinted at outsourcing some of there design work to me.

Treat them like people because they are people.

End rant.

One of our sales reps we call super bill... he seems to have all the answeres. We arae on very good terms with him. he'll stop by on his way to other clients and drop off doughnuts. he has to personally deliver a proof for a large job we do once a quarter and he usually takes us out to eat while we proof - he saved us one time so we actually surpised him by making up super bill shirts and taking him out to lunch. It's a good thing to be nice to reps.

Treat them like people because they are people.

End rant.

I dispute this claim that all of them are people. :D

Good ones are gold though. The best ones come out of the back shop.

A couple of my reps has sent some pretty juicy customers my way. They talk to more potential customers than I could ever dream to. I take them out to lunch once in a while and make sure they have a supply of my business cards to distribute. These two reps work for printers that don't have an in-house design dept.

You wouldn't believe how phony and lazy half these salespeople in printing are. Remember I just said half, the other half aint bad. Us prepress people make them look good and in many cases they wouldn't give a damn about you, your advice your time etc..What makes me the most angry is most and I mean most do not want to know any details about anything except their paycheck. I say this because I've dealt with car dealing types in printing for decades. If any production person's work ethic was any where near some of these leaches they would be fired. And having been a print salesman years ago, I've learned that my skills didn't matter so much as butt kissing did. But such is life. I feel better now.

Good point... I shouldn't have lumped them all into one. Jimking and Kool are right, the good ones are good, and the bad ones belong selling cars on A&E.
