So here's my dilemma,

I'm currently working contract for a company (and have been for several months) and my contract is up for renewal (again) in a few weeks. I was told that by the end of this contract period, the company would make a decision as whether to hire me full-time or not.

This is my first real job out of college and the people here are fantastic, but the type of design/work we do is not what I want to be doing. I'm actually more or a interactive production artist than a designer. Consequently, I haven't produced anything I'd put in my portfolio while here. I know this isn't the job for me for the long run.

I've been trying to update my portfolio and website, but I'm a terrible procrastinator when it comes to work for myself. So... and here's the big question you're all awaiting desperately (riiiiight).
If I am offered full-time, should I take it (and get my stuff out on the side?) or should I concentrate fully on getting a job that I'll enjoy (hopefully sooner)?

So help me please... fill me with your wealth of combined knowledge! Oh humble GDF'ers.

:D

Take the job and continue to look for jobs that you'll be happy with.

The perfect career is full of stepping stones of lesser perfection. It's what some people refer to as paying your dues. I think the experience will help you in the long run, even if you aren't doing the calibur of work you'd like to be. I did some grueling, crappy work in the past (and occasionally present) but the kind of work it was gave me a closer understanding of what was possible with certain printing methods. You can always quit when the ideal job comes along.

More importantly, this job might be the inspiration for your portfolio, in itself. Say you work on a job that just pisses you off. You know you could do so much better than what the client is asking for. So, it gives an idea for a similar fake concept for your portfolio. I've found that challenges in the work place can be a great inspiration in my sidework.

yup, same here. Take the job.

In addition, commit yourself to two hours each Saturday morning (or sometime convenient for you) every week to work on your portfolio - whether it is by doing an independent piece to include or working on a website for yourself. That will help you get it going, without being too overwhelming.

Take the job. Heck it pays the bills in the meantime.
