This summer, I am starting a small t shirt customization business. I will probably start by selling to friends, family, as well as other customers through ebay. Hopefully, after several weeks,I hope to have my own website, but I do not think it is necessary because I will not have enough designs.

My main question was if there are any legal precautions I need to take before starting, such as buying a domain name. It does not really seem necessary because of how small my "company" (if you can call it that) would be.

not really, the only thing I would recommend is going down to the Secretary of State's office in your city and file a Sole Proprietership under whatever name you choose. That way you can become legit and pay taxes, write invoices...etc.

domain names? unless its super un-original, I don't think you will have a problem with it, even if the name you want is used, there are always ways to work around getting people onto your site.

^what he said.
Domain name is the least of your worries.
Get registered. You can usually do it by going to Town Hall rather than the SoS office. That way you can get a DBA and open a separate bank account too.
As well as not get nabbed for back taxes, sales taxes, and all the other taxes. And if you post a loss, you can deduct from your own taxes. Maybe.
