I've got a client who uses 2 spot colours in their literature, and I'm producing an oversized A4 presentation folder for them. They use Pantone Bronze 876 (metallic) for their logo, and wanted the interior to be the same spot colour tinted to around 60%

My question is this : will tinting a metallic pantone cause it lose vibrancy and lustre, or worse, could it go patchy?

You should have no problem with screened metalics. 60% should produce well by a decent printer. Its luster may be reduced a bit, but still may look ok.

At what point do you lose the flake?

At 100% it's nice and shiny- reflective. You don't really see flake like a metallic on a car. Depending on the color it may deminish below 50%.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. So if you were in my shoes, would you reassure the customer it will be fine pre-print, or would you press him to move to 3-colour and use a seperate, lighter spot colour?

i have a couple of customers that use pms876 in their newsletters - lots of tints, halftones and duotones - looks good too, wouldn't recommend going to a third color, just make sure you have a good pressman

My experience is 40% and up will produce okay.. any less it's time to use the metallic as an overprint on a solid color.

Would these comments apply to A3 size solid coverage? There's a lot of space for problems...

What size is A3 in inches? Not sure of your question. In response to orkaknos12, generally it's not a good idea to overprint metallics.

297 x 420, not sure in inches. Too young, I guess...

Ever heard of conversion websites? e.g. http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html

BTW, A3 is 11.69 in x 16.54 in.

My excuse is I'm getting old and lazy. :D Still not sure what you mean when you say "there's a lot of space for problems..."
