for those that missed my previous post, i am working on my portfolio for graduating with my bachelor's in graphic design. I'm trying to play the illustration card to make me stand out in a sea of lame stock photography.
Digital Illustration:

nice work. Worthy of a portfolio piece. What will you use it for, business card, brochure, portfolio cover, etc.?

Very nice. A couple of things that stand out to me, her hands seem too different in size. And her cleavage seems off. You'd think the darker lines and the grayed lines would be switched - the heavier shadow would be further down.

well sakura is a japanese name
so it could just be the name of the character.
nice illustration.

only a good photographer will standout amongst a sea of lame stock photography, an illustrator wont... its a totally different field.
having said that you illustration is ok like people have said id look at the hands especially her right hand and id also make the flower background simpler, maybe loose or lighten the keylines on the flowers... they are really distracting my eyes.

WOW!! Very nice illustration. I have to agree with the others though...the hands seem a bit awkward, but aside from that...very sweet work! The amount of detail in it is great, the colors are perfect and the composition is really nice.
I wanna see more!!
Digital illustration is so much fun...I assume this is vector art...in Illy?? or not?

sexi! Very nice what was it done in?
So what are you going for here?
I see the illustration and its nice and all but, is this suppose to be a logo or what?
As graphic designers we are above all else problem solvers and I am failing to see what problem this piece solves. All it looks like to me is an illustration and as a graphic designer aren't you more concerned about the whole? I mean… is it suppose to be part of a business card or identity package?- and if it is then lets see the whole] rather then the individual pieces which make up that whole.
nice illustration though… even with how much I hate that "style". I would just like to see some graphic design since, your degree is in graphic design- not illustration. If that makes sense.- since, I assume you are trying to sell yourself as a graphic designer… allthough I quess I could be wrong.

Since the problems have already been discussed and I agree with them for the most part I will only say, very nice work your sense of color is very good and the things you are having trouble with like hands are the things that most illustrators labor over. I also think sometimes illustration just for the sake of it is great I wish more artist would just let the creative juices flow and illustrate what they like to illustrate not necessarily for any purpose. Sometime thats when we do our most satisfying work, and beside it's fun.

sakura is cherry blossom.. the flowers you see at the background of the illustration.

The illustration is amazing...nice job. The only thing I noticed was that the right breast looked smaller than the left.

To be honest, it was just a poster for student choice. It was originally on a tshirt, but i'd really like it to be for something that would work better. A Portfolio cover is not a bad idea, but for some reason, my school does not permit porfolio books. Everything has to be mounted on 15x20 black mounting board, and it drives me batshit.

Sakura in japanese means "cherry blossom", thus the cherry blossoms and such in the background.

I was speaking more of my school immediately, as opposed to the industry as a whole. But thank you for the concern.

I COMPLETELY agree, and it drives me up the wall. Because i made the cherry blossom swatch in a previous version of illustrator, it won't let me edit it, so i will probably end up trying to figure out how to make swatches all over again in CS and just dragging everything over. **** if i remember how; it was years ago.

Thank you very much for this: i've been looking for site where designers can hire artists, becuase all we have at school are outdated stock books.

You are absolutely correct: i have been trying for years, and i have completely failed to come up with a use for this illustration, and i find it mildly crippling.
The comments about hands and breasts have been noted, and i'm working on them now. Thank you very much, all of you.

I like the style very much. You might think of fashion illustration (even design) or hit up some MUD websites to do character portraits if you are looking for quick cash.
My only suggestion would be to remove some of the flowers in the back to air it up a bit and add some negative space that compliments the main figure.
