Hey guys. I was working on a logo for a freelance photographer/make up artist. Taking advice I was given in a different thread, Im doing this job for free. They wanted the logo to coincide with a photo of their's, some scenery with flowers and junk. haha.
I just have a simple logo Im playing with. Id like some feedback. Im just afraid it might look cheap or cheesy.. but Im kind of a starting designer, and she's kind of a starting photographer, so who knows.
Im a bit concerned with using yellow in a logo because of printing some times. are there certain yellows I should stick to? This example is in RGB, is yellow not so much to worry about when you work in CMYK?
Thanks in advance

As rules for logos go, and as our technology improves, the less you have to worry about the old guidelines. Like, this will work for web or stationary easily. But if you are thinking beyond that, like if the company goes global, how will it work as a knockout logo on some franchises’ brochure? Or if you are faxing a letter?
I get the idea that this person takes a lot of pictures of nature and is female.

I am sorry to be so harsh to a budding designer - so please dont take this to heart, but the colours, font and layout probably need to be scrutinised. you have too much space between the letters, but i would seriously consider changing the font at this stage. and bear in mind what will this look like at 20mm wide - I think you may lose the flower symbol all together. As a rule of thumb - I was always told to reduce your logo to 20mm wide - print it - photocopy it, then take a photocopy of your photocopy.
Dont give up on this because as someone has already said, it does convey the type of business its aimed at - just needs to be strengthened

I don't mind the font for Kaycee but I would use a complimenting font for the word Photo, I don't mind the whole flower symbol so much as where it is placed it is distracting I would maybe make it different color and maybe slightly smaller and make it coming off one of the letters or incorporated into the font somehow. Maybe coming off the y in Kaycee, but you would have to try it to be sure.

you are right about the yellow flower, it's not a good choice

The flower is nice, but I don't think it would work as a logo... maybe as a design element in a stationery piece or something. I'd loose the stem on the flower though.
There are good points above, it does convey femaninity and nature to me too.
The spacing between the letters is too high. In a script font like this, there shouldn't be a lot of space between the letters at all. In fact, the tail end of each letter should attach to the next letter, like it would in natural cursive writting.
It's a good start, keep it up :D

Designers are always 'taught' to take a logo small.
But what will this look like on a billboard or building sign. I can't see the flower well enough to know if it is a vector piece done with a brush or if it is solid vector. And does the font hold up?
What does it look like in black and white?
What would happen if you put a dark field behind the whole thing (other than adding a 3rd color).

I like the flower, but it would be much better above, below or to the side. You're going to eventually run into a problem where it's at - printing, signage, etc. Is there any way you can tie the flower into photography (maybe the aperture/shutter of the lens as it's center?)
I'm not crazy on the font. It's not as finished or polished as another one could be.
Color, make sure you're specificing the pantone colors, if she's just starting out, even two-color may be expensive for her. I would use a darker/stronger yellow. If your doing stationery or brochures in two-color the light yellow would be useless. Also, she's probably going to want photos on her materials... If they are going to be two-color, make sure at least one color will showcase your photos well.
You have a good start, just keep working and reworking it until it's a bit more refined. And think about all the ways the logo may be used, and what her budget will be for those things...

I just saw some well designed business collateral that has a simmilar yellow flower theme going on - let's see if I can find it on the web somewhere...
Barbara Bruch Design / Graphic Design...grr her business card isn't on her website.
She's taken the faded yellow floral design and incorporated it into the background imagery on her collateral...
Work with your typography and I would definitely change the bright green color - it vibrates to the point of annoyance. Setting the type smaller, and either offset or not directly on top of the flower may help increase the 'elegance' of this piece...
I really wish you could see what I was looking at for inspiration...Page 75 of "Fresh Ideas In Letterhead and Business Card Design 3" if you have a large library resource!
I like the font but think the kerning needs some work. Maybe try to give it a tighter kern.
As for the flower in the back… get rid of it.
If you want a symbol that identifies make a symbol that identifies… don't hide it in the background.
Something I noticed right away when looking at the font is that the curves in the e are some what consistent with those of the illustration of the flower in the back. Perhaps play with that and expand upon it to create a more unified and reconizable identity- one worth remembering. You could also use the K or something and put the flower between the arm and stem- some what mimicking a flower behind an ear. Even perhaps use an ear of the type and do it that way.

a second concept. any better?
I think Im going to create a sort of flower and camera type symbol to take the place of the plain flower, I just need to make the time to draw it up.
I hope this second logo is better looking. suggestion?
thanks

Much better.
The "Photo" is too large for my liking though, and either the "Kaycee" is too large or too heavy... I can't really decide.

Better. Nice use of color. What about making the t in Photo the stem of the flower? Just an ideaerrr...
here's an idea - make the flower a flash- like from a camera
This way you will communicate both the flower thing and photography.
win win situation
From what you have currently it shouldn't be to hard to make it into an evident flash because that is what it kinda sorta reminds me of currently.
thats not photoshop is it?
I would like to see some b/w versions of this when you refine it more. The color is nice and all but, lets see if it really works.
