I'm working on a project for a client and some other designer did the original artwork. Well he sent it to me, but it's a dcs eps. Illustrator won't open it. Photoshop will, but it looks rasterized. Any one know what's up with that? Btw, this guy is on a mac and i'm on a pc... not sure if that makes a difference...

I know DCS2 files are Photshop files, when you open the file in Photoshop does it give it give a window "Rasterize Generic EPS Format"?

You can also try adding .ai at the end of your file name and see if that will help you open the file in Illustrator.

Thanks for the info. It automatically tries to open it in illy, but I get an error message that says "dcs eps files cannot by opened or embedded. Place this file using the link option." (even if I add ".ai") So I tried linking it. It acts like it's been linked and shows where the image is on the screen, but it's blank. So I opened it in photoshop, and I didn't get the "rasterize generic eps format" window. So I tried to save it as a regular eps (I also tried tiff) and when I place the new file into illy it loses it's color and looks b&w. It looks like the pms color is on another channel. I'm not an expert in photoshop, but why wouldn't both channels (b&w and the pms color) save?

Okay.. the color mode was set on grayscale, but when I switched it over to multichannel (is that the right thing to do?) the black color shifts and looks brown.

It sounds like the designer is using the DCS file as a Spot Color from Photoshop.
the reason your not seeing an image when you bring it into illustrator is because they didn't save the DCS file with a "72dpi Image Composite."

place it in illustrator and then print out your Separations, and you will see that everything should be fine.
for some reason illustrator can't show any placed artwork other than CMYK on screen, Duotones, DCS, etc. never appear correctly on screen...however they do print correctly in Separations

doesn't keep a full color preview.... that's why Illy is not picking it up right

Ah makes sense... just placed it into InDesign and it shows up just fine. How weird. This is very different from how I would have created a 2-color image. But my ID swatch palette only shows 2 colors, so I guess it'll do.

Thanks guys!
