Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : what to do? Need suggestions for a camera...
I'm thinking of investing (and i seriously mean investing...cuz i'm a broke college student for the most part) in a Canon Rebel XT. I love photography, and would like a camera that could take good quality pics, but not break my piggy bank. What do you guys think? Any of ya'll have anything to say about this camera?
thanks a bunch.
Ally I dunno. But you might consider being more descriptive in your post title. The photographers may miss it. :)
I've heard nothing but good things about them Ally. I think that is what Tyger uses and he has posted some incredible shots. I used to have a Cannon EOS SLR (this was before digital) and I loved it. I don't think you can go wrong with one of these.

Canon makes prolly the best lenses around. You can generally bet the camera will be good if it has Canon on it. And Tyger has posted some incredible shots.

the digi rebel makes me drool. I want one... some day.
I've got a nice mid-level cam atm, and if you're looking for something a little less expensive, I'd recommend one of these.
Mine's a Canon PowerShot S2 1S
Of course, now they've gone and released the S3. <Sigh> What's a gal to do?

thanks on the advice guys.
i've gone through my share of cameras....
I have a Nikon SLR thats about 3 years old and while it takes awesome pics..it's not digital :/ I also had a Canon Powershot but I passed that one on to my little brother because I think i'm ready to move on to a bigger and better canon!
so i think you guys just about made up my mind...i just needed that little push!
canons all round, huzzah!

My Photography teacher would ask this question:
What do you want to take pictures of. If you want to take decent pics of people then a point and click fixed focus camera would work fine.
If you want to get fancy and take pics of moving objects etc. then a more expensive camera with adjustable shutter speeds etc. would be necessary..
I would say get the best "your $" can buy if you can't afford the $16,000
22 Megapixel from Hasselbland then get something of the best quality you can afford.

I purchased a Nikon D50 and feel it takes awesome pics.. It will eventually become obsolite.. but then again doe'snt everything....
With time it all becomes antiqiated so.. calculate in how important it is to you and figure it something like this... lets say you earn $10.00 per hour and what your wanting to purchase cost $10.00 .. Is it worth staying @ work for that item.. i.e. if your work gave you the item instead of $ would you get item of $.. Just my 1/2 cents worth.
the digi rebel makes me drool. I want one... some day.
that line was more convicing morea!

If you want good flesh tones and color, reliability, get a film camera.
If you want convenience, get a digital.

LOL! I've seen rebel photos, that's why! :D
I have been looking into the rebel xt too! I think it is a great DSLR if you want the main features without getting too pricy. If you are going to be using it for yourself, maybe some product shots, etc I think it is a good choice. My friend is a pro photog and has one (a long with a million other film and digi cameras!) and highly reccomends it.

ok. Here's a thought.
Dear JupiterMedia Claus,
I have been a very good girl this year. I have helped new members and told lots of horrible jokes, I've lived, I've laughed, I've loved, and I've been laid off, so I am very poor.
For Xmas this year I would like a unicorn, world peace, my own hovercraft, or a Digital Rebel... your choice. Or you could send me one dollar for each of my posts on this forum.
Your Friend,

Ally,
I bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT in February and love it! As someone who's into traditional 35mm and digital photography, the Rebel is the ultimate toy and tool. Beautiful lense, incredible response time, and a million modes to play with, from automatic, to full anal-freak aperture and iso control.
The way that I test new digi-cams: take a shot of a white daisy in the sun (without brightness control) and see how crappy it turns out.
(Will admit that any idiot can take a good picture with this thing...haha) It is an incredible camera --if you can make money off of it or have the cash to spare.
Get a Canon, a huge memory card, and go on vacation =). -Blu

I have a Digital rebel, and although it's a great D-SLR, there's more to it than that, most of what will extend the use of the camera is the lens/s you attach to it.
so say if you buy the camera with that stock lens that comes with it, your not going to go to far with that, but when you start flushing money down the drain into lenses is where an SLR really shines.
If you're on a budget, you might want to consider in more detail what you want to use it for and what lens you might need.
Low light? low f-stop = big bucks
action shots? low f-stop = big bucks
wide angle = big bucks
macro = big bucks
decent zoom = big bucks
decent zoom with low f-stop = super mega bucks
any canon lens with image stabilization = big bucks
B&H had a deal a few weeks back for a rebel xt with a 17-85 mm with image stabilization for something like $1100 with a $100 rebate...that's a good setup for all around use if you can afford it.

i'd reccomend you try to find an older model of the digital rebel. You'd be able to get it for a better price and than put your money into lenses. Your shot is only as good as the glass you shoot it through
