I am a recent graduate and was asked by a friend of mine to design a brochure for her and her moms company, a promotional agency. She was wondering how much I should charge an hour but I dont feel comfortable charging hourly and would rather charge her one cost to design the brochure. Also, being the designer, am I in charge of taking the brochures to the printer to get them printed? Do I include that in the cost? I was just wondering what would be a reasonable cost? I dont want to charge that much because I am a fairly new designer and am excited to have more printed pieces for my portfolio. Again, thanks everyone.

definately look at taking on the print too, if your starting out, that way you can start to build a relationship with a printer, learn the pre press knowledge that you must have and also if your lucky be able to put a small mark up on the print cost.
regarding your hourly rate, here in the UK the average rate is around £60 (i think thats about $85?) but i'm not sure how you US guys pitch. As this is quite new for you by the sounds of it, maybe a fixed cost is a good way to go, but be carefull that you dont get caught out on loads of re-work, when giving project costs i always use that line "a resonable amount of creative re-work" which means one phase of ammendments then you pay for it!!
hope this helps, sure there will be other comments.

I think there is general rule here on the forum against discussing pricing. I do not charge by the hour, what I do is estimate how long it will take me and mutiply that by what I figure my hourly rate to be and give the customer a price for the job. Like twogun said though make sure you specify the number pf revisions allowed or you could get slammed by a picky client. Getting the print end of it is great as well for the reason stated above and one day you may need to have your own promotional material or business crads or letterheads printed.

That's cool, I think it actually has to do with some kind of law about price fixing. Anyway, some people charge on an hourly rate and some people charge a flat rate, but really everyone charges hourly to some degree. When you charge a flat rate you are just estimating the amount of time it will take you and then figuring in your hourly rate.

Yeah it's a law in the US, which is where this site is hosted, so we have to toe the line.
what the reasoning behind that law?

what the reasoning behind that law?
I think it is to prevent price fixing, but I am not sure.
