Help the Noob?

I have the trial for Photoshop 7.0.1 (I wanna see if it's good before I spend so much money on it http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/icon_smile.gif), and I had some questions. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/frusty.gif

First, how do I select something?
I used teh marquee tool, but that didn't "select" anything; it keeps telling me [when I try to do Gaussian Blur] that I don't have anything selected.

Next problem: Under Layer, I can't find Merge Down

I got it now :D
My new problem is that when I duplicate a layer (let's call them layer 1 + layer 2: layer 2 is a duplicate of layer 1) and I edit layer 2, it changes layer 1.

Once again, problem solved.
As I solve one, I come up with a new question/problem.
How do I set a layer to vivid light?

I just duplicated the layer 3x and merged. Gave teh effect I wanted.
