hello. i'm a noob here so sorry if this has already been discussed.

i'm having a hard time deciding whether or not I want to go back to school for graphic design or for web design. I suppose they both go hand in hand but I guess I was wondering if one was better than the other, that is, which provides more stablility? I know the design industry is pretty saturated so i'm apprehensive about spending the time and money going into an industry that may not pan out for me. I guess i'd like to hear from those of you that work in both job markets. what can I expect once I get my foot in the door? what's the payscale for graphic designers versus web designers? any info would be appreciated.

It's saturated and highly competitive in both fields. But there's always room for the best.

You're better off trying to learn as much as you can about both. You'll standout from the crowd more, and be more assured of being able to make a good living.

But don't take half measures. Like JPnyc says, learn all you can. That means learning to code without relying on Dreamweaver or GoLive, and learning to print in every conceivable format.

OR

Find a niche you really love and stick to it. Specialize in one or the other or one aspect of either and do it really REALLY well.

Unless you are happy doing what you do in this industry, you will have a hard time achieving your goal of making a living at it.

You can learn everything there is about web design and graphic design. I think you first need to determine -- and be honest with yourself -- if you have talent and passion. Don't just go into it because you think it'd be a cool way to earn a living.

Well actually Steve, that's pretty much what I did :D ;)

Now come on, Joe. You know we have to look beyond our own, sometimes exceptional, experiences when handing out general advice. :)

Learn both and don't get anything less then a Bachelors Degree. Stay determined cause you will need it. Develop tough skin and learn the difference between what someone thinks and professional work. Trust me you will always work to satisfy a client so learn to take direction while leading at the same time. Good luck!
