What is the deal with producing a PDF? Does the "export to PDF" feature in Quark 6 accomplish this, or do you HAVE to use Adobe Distiller. And if you use Adobe Distiller, do you have to make a post script file first, then run it through distiller?

Why do I get a error message, when I use Export/Layout as Pdf?

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure you need to use a Distiller for Quark 6.

You are better off by going ‘print to PDF’ than exporting. I don’t know why, how Quark handles the exports or what, but I do know there is a difference and the print to pdf is the real way to get a solid pdf.

Pretty sure you need Distiller, but not necessarily running.

You don't need Distiller to make a pdf from quark.
It IS however preferable to print postscript and then Distill it.
In the PDF section of the prefs you have to option of straight to PDF vs. PS to Distiller.

Thanks,
Can I convert text to outline (or curves) in Quark?

No you will need to embed the font, WARNING beware of faux styling in Quark, it can bite you later. The new version of pitstop (for acrobat) should allow you to create outlines in the PDF.

Scary stuff, huh, PB?!

Not really the whole PDF thing is my forte these days.
How a file format goes from screen only (adobe's idea for PDF) to here's my PDF and my edits (client's idea of what they think a PDF should be)....talk about the market driving innovation. PDF for print...who'da thunk it?

Thanks PB, What is "faux styling"?

Bolding a font on the control bar when there is no bold face loaded in the font manager. Helvetica Bold <plain> is right Helvetica is not. Some will work some will not when faux styled. It's hit and miss so generally not a good idea.

Theoretically, Quark is supposed to pull the actual version of the font when you do that, but PB is right -- hit and miss at best. InDesign won't even let you do that. And I remember the days when Quark so nice to use...

The problem with "print to pdf' is, that you have to make a page size for the document when printing, unlike other program, when you publish/export to pdf the pdf will be the exact size by default, and no blank space around the ad.

Just punch in custom values when the print options pop up.

barring that, you can print to a page size a little larger than the one you want, with just the crop marks turned on, and then crop it in acrobat. you are preflighting the pdf in acrobat, if you don't have pitstop, right?
