I have a client that I am at the end stages of the project and the job is at the printer. The price was agreed apon but the money had to be juggled some and I am being the middle man on the printing and I have my mark-up in it. I am just a one man gig and have no idea what to do about the tax exempt issue. Any suggestions?

If it was me, I'd call find a helpline online for your state's Small Business Administration or Dept of Commerce. Each state may have it's own rules.

I know here in Jersey they have to have a tax exempt ID#. At my full time we do alot of tax exempt stuff, churches and non profits and the like.

I definitely would check it out at your state Treasury Department level.

i wonder if, because you're the middle man, then it doesn't matter. i mean, do you charge tax to your other clients? if so, then you wouldn't to these folks. but if the printer is billing you directly for the printing, than you have to pay the tax since you yourself are not tax-exempt.
i get kind of weird in those situations, so sometimes i just have the printer do business directly with the client and forgo the mark-up, which is getting harder and harder to justify with all the low-cost internet printers.
but, if you have any confusion at all, get your questions answered as best as possible before any money starts moving. better to be safe than sorry.
