I have just updated illustrator to CS2, but I am having some problems.
Problem 1: When ever I open an image it opens as a small thumbnail even when its zoomed in at 100%. This is VERY annoying. It opens fine in all the other programmes.
Problem 2: At the moment I am jumping from programme to programme because illustrators lasso tool sux. I have read the instructions but I still can't get it to work. People have told me to use the pen tool but I can't see how this can do the same job as the PL Tool.

instead of Open, use Place.
you should really learn the pen tool.
are you trying to use the lasso tool on the inside of a bitmap image in illustrator?
it shouldn't matter if you place, drag or open a bitmap image in illustrator. It will always be the same size. You probably have a very small image to start with.

The lasso tool isn't meant to select bitmaps from Illustrator. I think it's more meant as a non rectangular selection tool, to select objects. The selection tool and direct selection tool only select as rectangular marquis, the lasso selects whatever you draw the lasso around.
Emma, I think if you're trying to edit a raster image, you're going to have to do it in Photoshop.
Hopefully I've understood what you're trying to accomplish?

Yeah I am. I was just HOPING i could do this in illustator, as I do like some of the effectis I can get in illustrator.
The image I was trying to open is 521 pxl in Width and 700 pxl in height. So it’s not a small image. But Illustrator keeps resizing it. But this dosn't matter anymore. Ill do this in one of the other programmes.

Is the image a JPG or.... what? Some JPGs contain resolution data, some don't. This really wasn't introduced until Photoshop 6, I think. To further complicate things, many programs still don't even check for JPG res data, they simply assume 72 dpi. That's why they come in to what you would call 'full size'. But AI does check.
Or, (and I'll have to check how this might be happening), it might also just be rescaling a low rez image to fit the document resolution, and automatically resizing low-rez images to fit the doc quality.

Emma, you need to have a specific goal in mind when designing with programs. What is it exactly that you are trying to do? Maybe someone can tell you if you can do it in Illy.
Slamming images/layouts around and jumping them from program to program can be a good way to make something unprintable.
Also, when designing for print, jpg files are a no-no. So is working on jpg files repeatedly in photoshop. Every time you save jpg to jpg you lose image integrity.

Who says I was working for print?? I was just having a play around with the new Illustrator programme. I upgraded it from 10 to CS2...that’s all.

Hmm, I'm not sure what effects you're trying to get in Illustrator that you can't get in Photoshop. Can you elaborate? Photoshop has tons of effects for images.
