I inherited my work computer from the designer before me and he had this computer for quite awhile. Once upon a time he ran OS 9, then switched to OS X which I have been keeping updated since I started. I have NEVER used anything from the System 9 Folder in my hardrive.
Is it alright to delete that file or would I be making some sort of HORRIBLE mistake?
Though I can navigate a mac with much ease I don't really know what makes it tick. I'm trying to learn more.
Thanks!

If you ever need to run some legacy software that doesn't work in OS X, your computer will start 'classic mode' which will need that system 9 folder. Unless you are desperate for that ~250MB of disk space, I would leave it alone.
Personally, I have 2 OS 9 system folders on my mac, but that's because it is so ancient I sometimes boot into OS 9 instead of just running something in classic mode.

I agree, I'd leave it if you're not crunched for space. As soon as you delete it, you're going to need it. It's the law. ;)

To be contrarian, I haven't had OS9 installed on any of my Macs since 2004 and I haven't missed it one bit.
Of course, I can't even install it on my Intel iMac or MacBook if I wanted to...

I haven't got anything but Tiger here at work and also at home. We have a couple of older OS9 macs lying around, when I need to use legacy software (every now and then I do, but for small stuff), I use one of those.

i'd have to agree. if you're hurting for 250+ MB of space, then you really need to clean more off your harddrive.
a kind of scary thing can happen as well. are you running any font management or managing them with fontbook? if not, then the only way to make the fonts useable in both classic and OSX apps is to put them all in the OS9 system folder. so, if you fit that criteria and delete that folder...
just a thought.

Agreed. Leave it be if it does not take up too much space on the HD.

I'd leave it.
