Getting the following Illustrator error when I attempt to open a .ai file that was previously working without any problems. I hit save and closed it - went to open it a few minutes later and the error was occuring.

" Unable to open illustration. ID=-50 "

The file then continues to open but the illustration is mangled - tons of strokes missing, etc. This was all done on the same machine in a matter of hours - within Illy CS2.

Is the id=-50 an error code?

a) i've never heard of a negative error code! Wtf?
b) Googling any error code from an app. usually yields results, this did not.

I solved the problem by opening the ai in Acrobat (it worked 100% correctly). I saved it as a PDF and opened it in Illy - this did not work. I went back to Acrobat and saved it as an EPS - now it opens fine in Illustrator, and I have resaved it in the .ai file format - so I'm back to where I began with a working file.

I would still like to know - what the hell happened and is there a way to repair the original file?

Hmm, don't know what that one means but for what it's worth, I posted it in the Adobe forums, to see if anyone has a clue. Will keep you posted.

A couple of questions,

In the Illustrator forum, I was asked whether or not the file was being opened from a network? Also, another user suggested repairing disk permissions, I'm not sure whether or not you're on a Mac or not?

You can go to the Adobe forums if you'd like to add more info to the post. I titled the thread "Illustrator Error Code". They don't require a serial number in order for you to post. Just a username and password.

I'm on a PC - and it was a local file, not over a network. I'll go try to find the Adobe forums post now - thanks for the help!
