I keep getting annoying white edges around the curves in my transparent GIFs. I'm going to be setting them against a gradient background so I'm not sure that setting a matte color will help.
Any ideas?

yeah it's too bad that .png isn't supported in IE it works so well for this type of scenario. I think you'll pretty much have to set some sort of matte to it, maybe just a mid-tone?
Edited to add -- I recall reading a way to force IE to interpret .png transparency but I have actually never done it or tested it, nor do I know how reliable that would be. Maybe somebody here knows more.

Maybe try using Diffusion Transparency Dither? This is presuming that you're using Save for Web out of Photoshop.
