Guys out there,
I m a newbie here. And i urgently need help. I need to make a 2 by 12 ft banner for tomorrow. It consists of vector graphics touched up by photoshop. If you're interested in specifics, you could take a look at this http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/33082273/. I need to put the girl on the banner. I was wondering what the document size should be. And what the resolution size should be. I read in another thread that its OK to cut down to 1/3 of the doc size and keep it at 100dpi. or do it full size and keep dpi at 300. The problem is my laptop keeps crashing, and it cant handle the huge size. Is it ok to cut down the resolution to lower than 100dpi and keep the doc size to 1/3 or is there any other way to alter the doc size and still get a good print?:( Your help is much much appreciated :)

Talk to the place that will be doing the printing. When in doubt call the printer. It will largely depend on what kind of printer they are using and media. If was completely vectorized it wouldn't matter.

How far away are people going to be from the banner?? That will dictate how low on the rez you can go.

Definitely talk to the printer first but 50dpi at final size should be more than enough. You should be able to do the banner at full scale. The artboard is under the 220" Illustrator limit.

As for getting it 'Tomorrow', expect up to 300% rush charge. Printed banners have to be finished with stitching and grommets. 5 business days is usual. Under 3 is rush. Overnight is...well...

2 x 12 is not very big. Large format is not for computers with faint hearts. LOL!

Thanks guys for your replies.
I cant contact the printer. Coz my client is sponsoring one social event here, and the sponsers are getting the banner printed for him. And they're not printing it locally , infact. Its complicated. Anyway, I think banner will be viewed from 20 feet away. Whats the safest resolution I can pull off? And what should the doc size be for that resolution.

100dpi at final size to be safe, I guess.

Actually tomorrow is MY deadline. Printing charges will be taken care by my client.
yeah..and my laptop needs a heart transplant. hehe. So 50dpi at the original doc size right?

50 dpi at ACTUAL SIZE banner size.

And remember to put in 2" of bleed if the design bleeds to the edge. If this has a pipe pocket instead of grommets, 4" of bleed for each pocket.

Do NOT rez up your artwork. If it hasn't been created at a resolution that will enlarge to 50dpi at final size, you are technically screwed. Fractals may help or PSCS2 may help with its new interpolation engine (we're digging it by the way).
