That would suck.

Note to self: bring drill when getting HD checked.
Appendature to Note to Self: bring drill anyway to fend off stupid people.

Sounds like something Best Buy would do.

They're particularly awful about selling as many add-ons as possible when you do (buy a computer), too. My friend's step-monster went to Best Buy to buy a computer and another one of my friends (very computer saavy) was along with them. The Best Buy salesman started adding things like gold-plated USB cables, etc to the cart and was flabbergasted when he saw my friend removing them and swapping them with cheaper alternatives (which were just as fine and what she really did need). My friend and the salesperson broke out into an argument in which the salesman had no defense.

Another time was when I was buying my old third-gen iPod. The salesperson had to get the manager to unlock the case, and as he reached for the cube box, I caught the manager whispering "Make sure he buys a case."

To which I blurted out "It ALREADY comes with a case." They shut right up.

Then, don't get me started on extended warranties.....

I have friends who work at the local BB. The management is uber-anal retentive about them selling almost every accessory imagineable.

That's why I was awesome at Target when I was in charge of electronics; I didn't pressure people into buying shit they didn't need. Basically told them the barebones for items (like memory card for a camera or batteries) but I didn't go full force and tell someone who's buying a PS2 to buy every game out there.

Do they remind you at every store that "We're not on commission?" when they're trying to get you to buy stuff? Pretty much the same thing when you walk into a Target and someone says "Can I help you find something?" (by someone, I mean every single person working there...it can get old); it's corporate policy to utter verbatim words. Concertive control works wonders.

well if you notice, there is no sign that says "non-proffit". it's sales, thats what they do...um, sell.
i do agree, i hate to be "sold to" also, but that's because i am savey enough to know what i need for myself. from what i have seen at the locations i go to, they recommend stuff that is pertinent. Someone who has no idea what they need, might actually appriciate that. but, thats just my opinion:)
Not that that's what this thread is about anyway... cause i would be beyond pissed if i was that guy too!

There's a fine line between making a legit sale and giving a customer shit that they don't need because they don't know any better. I am a firm believer that honesty brings returning (and paying) customers. What irks me is when they don't know when to DROP IT. "NO I DON'T WANT IT" is not in some people's vocabulary.

i completely agree with you reuber. i am certainly not contesting your points. i guess i am just lucky to have a store (2 actually) that have ethics and integrity. everytime i go in there, they offer me everything that could possibly go with my purchase... sometimes i take it, sometimes i don't.
I know what they are there to do though... i don't have a problem with making money. i also don't have a problem telling them to kiss my arse when they get too pushy:)

OK, I was pretty much like what you're describing. I would offer them what some of the other options or accessories were, but I wasn't going to push them into getting something that I know they didn't need. A lot of people gave me pretty specific questions so I knew exactly what to give them.
