I know this is something I should know but I have never done it. How do you register a domain name?
Awesome Mike this might be really good.

you basically have to reserve a domain name ($20/yr if you use Invitation Code AP4994) and then find hosting to point the domain name to. your hosting company should walk you through the domain pointing process.

$20 a year!!! You must be nuts. I got mine from http://www.web.com for $6.95 a year. You can get even cheaper than that depending on how long you reserve it, and the type of ext. (e.i. the .us domains are on sale for 5.95 a year).
And http://www.distanthost.com provides free hosting with no ads, 100MB, mail accounts, CGI, PHP support, and everything else.

There is no such thing as good free hosting, mainly because a good site can take up a lot of space if there is a lot of content. Hell, most times there is no such thing as good paid hosting either. I am pretty happy with my host, but sometimes their customer service is slow to respond.

I got my site at godaddy.com, although it is still being designed, it only cost me $25 to set up my domain name, and I pay $8.00 a month for hosting, something like 300megs, 5 pop emails, 3gig of transfers...etc etc.... I thought it was a great deal for my company.
check it out if you got like $30 bucks layin around to throw down to register your domain name.

for domain registration we use gkg.net (we have over 750 domains registered via gkg.net 9.95/year (with discounts for longer registrations) and their transfer fee from other registrars is on $7.95 and that includes a year registration. We have found the the easist to use to manage domains, and if you have to clal them you get someone on the phone. Oh they do not charges for domain trasfers (selling a domain to another person) if they also have a gkg.net account (no charge to create an account to do the transfer).
I got tired of paying lip service to Network Solutions, thye keep charging $35 a year and pretty soon no one will use them. I think i have a couple there I haven't moved yet, but when it comes to renew them (and clients renewals) they will be moved over to gkg.net
Hosting? WHo need hosting <g> I own my own network and server farm (LOL). Need hosting, professional and business hosting www.gmpservices.com/hosting.asp (http://www.gmpservices.com/hosting.asp)
I think all in all we have more services than most hosts (anti-virus scanned email, spam filtering (extremely good spam filtering), webmail and regular email (applications like outlook, mac mail, etc.), weekly back ups (nighly SQL backups), fast sites, ftp and frontpage/dreamweaver access, all sites server compressed apges to speed up web page loads (most hosting providers don't offer compression), lots of other stuff too, there is even a web stats option ($5 a month though). We even have a do it your self store package must like Yaho stores only better ;-) Even includes shared SSL for secure checkout.

does it allow direct linking to images?

I think if you have an actual site and it is being used, then there is no problem. But I dont think they want people using them as 'storage. You can ask them about it but I dont think it is a problem since in a description it says 'sharing your digital photo album online. This doent mean hotlinking but Im sure they know you may hotlink to show people.
If they see it as a problem, here is another site just for images...
