hiya,
i'm about to do a cover with a matt laminate with selective varnish on top. an i was wondering a few things, maybe someone with a bit of experience with these techniques can help me with:

1. are there different types of matt laminates used? can i have a thinner or thicker one, more or less matt. it looks to me like some of them kill color more than others, perhaps because they're thicker (i'm using a lot of black underneat and i'm worried it won't be deep enough). also - would it be normal to find a printing press that has more than one type (i'm working with a pretty big place - they print books, large scale weekly magazines, etc...

2. i had a strange idea - the varnish is printed with silkscreen (i hope that's the technical name in english) - can i do a gradient between varnished and not-varnished, which is something i know can be done with regular colors and silk screen?

so if anyone's playedx around with these things, i'd be really happy for some thoughts or ideas.
thanks alot,
uri

1.) there are both different 'grades' of how matt the laminate is, and also the laminate is available in different thickness. All matt laminate kills colour unfortunately.

You can either search a company that gives you some choices, or find an outside laminate company to laminate the covers and return them to the binder. Why settle with something you don't like ?

2.) as far as i know varnish is just a seperate color, and can be used as such.

Matt lamination makes the cover thicker, but the color will look like matt varnish. However many customers like matte lamination very much. It depends on the design style of your covers.

Also you could try spot UV which is gradient between UV varnished and not-UV varnished

glossy and matt varnish by press mchines is a good choise too.

Overall, glossy and matt varnish is the cheapest.
