Jack the cat chases black bear up tree
WEST MILFORD, N.J. - A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice.
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/4042/jackthecat7dg.jpg
Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.
"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions.
Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.
After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.
Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods.
"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said.
Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

LOL! That's hilarious. A guard tabby. I wonder if they need a Beware of Tabby sign for their yard.

Okay, I can't resist! Here's my Othello about two weeks after his surgery. He went missing for 9 days and returned home with his leg broken and rotten. He lost half his body weight, was severely dehydrated, anemic, both hips out of joint and so happy to see me! $1500 later, he's doing great! I'm so proud he made it. The vet thinks he got caught in a chain link fence thus breaking his leg and dislocated his hips trying to break free. When the pain wore off enough, he came home! He's almost 10!

I'm glad he made it! Good for you, cornfed.
I found a little cat in the road once who had been hit by a snowplow. He had a broken pelvis in two places and had an eye amputated. I took him to the vet, who said that he may not ever walk again, and that since they can't cast a pelvic break it would have to heal on its own... 6 months and a lot of tlc later, he was doing backflips.
Cats are wonderful :D

06-15-2006, 09:26 PM
Yeah, his the ligaments in his hips couldn't be put back in place. He just grew scar tissue to balance on. He's doing great, despite my 3 year old. It's so weird, cause I can tell that he appreciates it!

My granny once had a cockerel that would go into gurd mode when a stranger walked in through the gate. He would puff up his feathers and appear large and menacing. People only thought it was funny and did give him much attention- did not stop granny from being robbed though:(

I had a cat that "interviewed" strange men. (He layed on the piano and glared at them or, if they dared stay over, he guarded the door to my room) His name was Damien and he was awesome. When cats pick you, it's great!

Cute pic with the cat and the bear.
The thing to remember about bears is that they really have the personality of large dogs. This means they're kinda dumb and easy to intimidate. I wish small dogs were the same way, the little brats.
