I made a p-style in one document, then applied it to a short bit of text. i then made a new document and copied that text to the new doc and it brought the style with it. I then deleted the copied text but it left the style.
Maybe that would work?

After you format based on what you want, click new paragraph style while the paragraph is selected. It picks up the attributes of the paragraph formatting that you currently have selected.

I understand that part, but when I do that, it puts a drop cap on the start of every sentence, and I don't want that.
And how the freaking hell do you work this new "Nesting" Feature?? Anyone, anyone...bueller...bueller?

It's going to do that after every paragraph return I guess. Not sure what you're trying to achieve, I guess. Just a drop cap at the very first paragraph at the beginning of an article, perhaps?

i would create a character style with the text selected... in this way you only apply it to the first word of the paragraphs you want...

To answer the initial question:
>>I want to import those style sheets into my pre-existing magazine layout<<
Open up the mag layout, go to the Styles palette, click on the little black triangle that opens up the submenu and select 'Load paragraph styles'. Then browse to the document containing the styles you wish to import, select it and it will bring them all in. If there are already styles with the same name in the mag layout you will be asked to choose between the incoming style or to keep the existing style. You can do the same with Character Styles.
