Ok I am just starting a graphic design buisness, I have a Roland Vinyl Printer, and I have ran across a problem I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere, I have a company's logo that is vector art, I want to put it into Photoshop to and apply a layer effect, then I want to throw it back into Illustrator and just have the effect and the vector properties, but anyway I try to do this It doesn't work.

I have tried asking at Creative cow and this is what there answer was http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=58&postid=856881

this is how to do it:
open the vector logo in photoshop at the exact size it is printing.
apply the Layer Effects you want.
right click the layer effect title in you layer pallet and then select "create layers."
now delete the original logo layer.
Save it as a PSD.
Open your vector logo in illustrator and then place the PSD in layers.

now your logo is still in vector, and only the layer effects are in Raster.

So the logo is 2 parts? A Rastersized block with the vector outline on top, is there anyway to combine them?

yes, 2 parts, the Raster effects and the Vector logo.

this is why you can't combine them:

You could place the logo in Photoshop (at final print size), put your layer effect on it, then save it as a Photoshop EPS with vector info. In order for this to work however, you have to place the vector logo as a shape, not as pixels. You can then reimport this Photoshop EPS into Illy.

Caveat: sometimes Photoshop EPS files with vector info are buggy on some RIPS, but I'd give that a shot. It works really well on our in-house printers, and on our Epson Stylus Pro 9000.

You can create layers for the layer effects, select these pixels, and create paths which can be exported into illustrator.

The obvious drawback with this suggestion of course is the fact that the fall off in transparency of your selection once you convert to a path will be lost. (Don't think the vinyl cutter would complain about this though) and so glows etc. will look a bit naff. The application of this though, is that it may perhaps provide a strong basis for some Illustrator *adjustments*.

You can use the clipping mask in Illustrator and just "place" the effect (a psd file) inside your object. Maybe it it better to first copy the original logo and out line the logo on top and mask the layer below that one.
