Hello all,

I've been a member here for about a month, but have yet to introduce myself.

Background: Mostly "Fine Art", graduated college with a BFA in Painting, after that, did a lot of stuff most Painting majors do: work real crappy jobs, talk a lot about art, paint, occasional gallery show, drink, etc.

I did end up doing some production work with some comics companies, sold art supplies and worked as a consultant at a gallery.

One of the better gigs was working with a college buddy designing some fairly high-end (white tablecloth) hotel-based restaurants - a cool gig where we worked on site in several states, painting murals, making sculptures and basically making "it" happen. Cool work when we could get it, but not as steady as I would like.

So, around 2000A.D. my wife and I got a computer for a wedding present, and I went ahead and learned a thing or two about graphic design, and the requisite (print) programs.
The computer part - and the programs were fairly easy to learn (I somehow thing knowledge of fine-art printing and carpentry helped me out here - I am big on learning "art process").

The learning curve on the Graphic Design paradigm was relatively smooth too, but at that time the job market was thinning fairly rapidly.

Anyway, for the last 4 years I have been working for a Health Club management company - one that owns and operated 5 Health Clubs in NYS and CT.

I cover a wide range of tasks, flyers, forms, posters, brochures, annual catalogs, photography, etc, etc.

I'm now looking at other opportunities closer to home (I live in Queens, work in Westchester - so 50 minute commute- yuck), or the occasional freelance gig.

Anyway, here is a link to my site (web design is definitely not my forte), but I'm planning on redesigning the layout and perhaps the navigation..

Other info: I am the father of an extraordinary 19 month old boy, and am looking forward to another child this December.

I am an avid guitar player, and have a passion for all things aesthetic, especially music and art. I love traveling, touring museums, arboretums, gardens, woods and sites of interest and history. I am also very fond of beer and pubs - I love a good bar. Also very fond of comedy films.

One of my more recent projects is to re-engage the "pencil and brush to paper and canvas" skills that I have thoroughly neglected since learning the computer.
I'm planning on attending some drawing/modeling sessions, or perhaps taking a class at the Arts Student League, just to regain the practice.

I hope I was not too long winded.

ciao

welcome seamus! I wish I were a better painter. I am a bit of a musician though, french horn and very basic keyboards. Fond of beer and pubs, too. GDers have so much in common! ;)

Darn, Neuro and I were just down in NYC this weekend. Next time we'll have to make a more public announcement and meet the rest of the NYC area GDFers!!!

Welcome (officially) to GDF! Hope to see you around even more!

Where were you in from?

Lake George area, Upstate. About an hour north of Albany.

We mostly hung around and had beer. LMAO! Next time though, we need to announce it ahead of time and meet up with more GDFers!

OK I saw some of the pics, please don't tell me you spent most of the time in Midtown and Times Square!

Better watering holes are elsewhere, but hope you had a blast nonetheless.

Welcome, Seamas! My husband has the same name, but he says his mom gave him the bastardized American spelling of it - Shamus. None the less, I think it's a beautiful name.

Your work looked nice. It's impressive that you have been able to promote basically the same concept in so many different ways. I've had to do that in the past and found that my job was more like a big brainstorming session! I was always brainstorming!

I also play guitar and sing. I own a fiddle, but haven't really gotten past devils dream and arkansas traveller. I play a lot of old timey music and cajun stuff. What type of music do you play?

Happy Fathers Day! We have 3 kids - 13, 11 and 3. One is none, two's a ton and three is a whole new way of life.

Thank you (both Cornfed and April).

Seamas isn't my real name, I was given it when taking some Irish language classes and it stuck (Seamas = James in Irish).

I play an assortment of music, lot's of blues, rock/bues, folk/blues, rock, a little bit of jazz influenced stuff, a little country-inspired stuff. I try to fake a bluegrass flat-pick lead every once in a while.

I've listened to Old Timey music for some time now (long before the Oh! Brother movie), I never actually bothered to learn any of the songs as a repitoire though, I do pick up the vibe through general absorption.

Every once in a while I blow on the harmonica too. Since they are key based there is a good chance I'll miss the sour notes!

Thanks for the welcome.
