I've setup a label file for print and the printer is suggesting that we pay extra (almost double the price) for "Electronic Plates" since the color fades are so intense.

i've never heard of this before, i thought he was talking about Digital Printing, but he said no it will still be Rotogravue, just a different kind of Plate...

can someone shed some light on this?

We have had things electronically engraved where I work full time. I think that is what you are talking about but I am not sure. Are these metal labels?

We're computer to plate and the plates cost ALOT more than old plates. But this shouldn't be a concern of the client, I wouldn't think...if that's what he's referring to. You're cutting out the film and stripping costs of labor and materials, but again, that shouldn't be of any concern to you, it should just be in the price of the job.
