The prospect of a new client prompted me to add the following illustrations to my portfolio. (Thanks, Rob.) I'm a newbie with the gradient mesh tool, so critiques would be appreciated. Praise wouldn't be bad either! http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/happy.gif It's just hard to be objective when it's your own work, ya know?
Someone posted a link in another thread (www.bastidgraphics.com (http://www.bastidgraphics.com)) and that guy's artworks were what inspired me to do the building.

Ooooooh, this is fantastic work. Ok, im bieng completly honest here, on the guitar everything seems to be damn near perfect, except that you want to add a slight dropshadow on the inside of the carvings to give it depth, right now they look like designs rather then actual cuts.
The building is very neat, i like it.
The bar.....OMG, someone get this girl to do camel ads, you got a knack for it, awesome job, shadows and lighting are f'n lovely!!! Im in awe over this one, seriously.

Nice work ylaenna! I agree with D-Frag on the dropshadow inside the carvings on the guitar but that one is still my favorite! Looks JUST like the electric guitar my dad bought when he was 16 years old! He still has it.
Great work....keep posting :o)

Thanks guys! Yeah, those knobs do look pretty flat. Gonna have to fix that. Also, I think the bar will be a work in progress because there are so many little details that I didn't have time to get into. I mean, look at the walls and the ceiling - just blank. And there should be more stools. Anyway, thanks mucho for the input.
Camel ads.... weeeeeeeeee!

Those are FINE! I haven't got this excited since the first time my parents left town for the weekend and I discovered that there was more to Pamela Anderson on the internet then Baywatch...
Anyways I think those are great, I'd love to see you take a shot at something organic. Say a person for example, say Pamela Anderson for example.
Match in the gas tank, boom boom.

LMAO!! OMG, that's so wrong I think I may just take a stab at it. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/yeah.gif If it comes out ok, I'll post it here - with a black bar over the BOOBIES of course. I'll make sure you get a copy of the uncensored version though, EN. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/laugh.gif
BP, you're right - the bar is the most cartoony looking, plus the reflections are all wrong but daaaaamn it was a bitch to put together. The building is my favorite because it looks the most real. To me, anyway.
Thanks again, everyone!

Thanks, you guys!http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/happy.gif
Mr. Alien, I'm not sure how long each one took. I worked on all 3 of them off and on over the 4th of July weekend. I'd guess an average of 2 hours per image, maybe 3 for the bar. Is that horrendous? http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/blink.gif

sister, the building is my favorite too. :) That reflection of the sun was really easy with the new Flare tool in Illustrator and I'm wondering if it would cause any problems at rip.

Gracias, BB. All good things take time, eh? Except for good quickies. heehee!
D, I'm not worried about people taking them because the actual vector versions are safe with me. Thanks for the concern though! :D

Wee! Thanks so much for the kudos. (Kudos?! Who the hell says kudos these days?) Glad to have passed the illustration bug on, since I originally caught it from whoever does the art on www.bas†ardgraphics.com.
I downloaded some Pamela photos but that project just seems so daunting right now. Heh.

Booze! Booze will strengthen you. I prefer Margaritas for truly inspired work, but that window of creative coordination is so narrow with Margaritas - know what I mean?
Don't do Pamela. Do someone more attractive - more wholesome. I know D-frag (I think it was) suggested Pam, but somehow she's holding you back... though I know she'd never do that intentionally.
Let's come up with someone else for you to illustrate. Whomever you do will be challenging, but isn't that how we grow? What the hell - do Pam. You're up to it!
You can do it, ylaenna.

wow very impressive ylaenna, would you mind giving some tips or step by step instructions on how you came about doing these?? newbies like myself would really appreciate that :)

Appreciate the compliment :D but I'm kinda new to the gradient mesh tool myself. Learned by following a tutorial on how to make a curtain. These images are my 2nd, 3rd and 4th mesh projects (the 1st one being a computer mouse which I used for a logo). But I can tell you that it helps to:
1) See the different shapes that make up your image, instead of seeing the actual image.
2) Use different layers.
I have a whole lot to learn about this tool and I'm realizing now that, although the building is my favorite because it looks the most real, it's also the easiest one to do because it is mostly composed of straight lines.
Someone posted a link some months ago of this girl's vector artwork and it totally blew me away. She did photo-realistic illustrations of people, women so real you could practically lick the gloss off their pouting lips. I can't find the thread or the link now. If someone has that link, I would very much appreciate a re-post.

Hey ylalenna, I think you might mean Autumn Whitehurst. Her work is - well, it's so good I can't think of words to describe it. Her site is:
altpick.com/autumn (http://altpick.com/autumn)
I contacted her about a year ago saying 'Oh-my-god-I-am-the-worlds-biggest-fan-how-the-hell-do-you-do-these-?' And we had a bit of a back and forth about her technique. She wouldn't give it all away, but she did say she works in Illustrator, Photoshop, and Painter. They are completely hand done.
