Hi, I'm working on a magazine at the moment and are going down the route of importing the text into indesign CS2 so the typesetters can make amendments to the Word files then I can update the text link in indesign. I'm having some problems though. First of all when I import the text and make a change to the word doc and update the link I loose all my styles that I had on the text. If I make a further change to the word doc and go to update my link, I find that my text link no longer exists in the links palette in indesign. Can anyone help or am I overlooking something simple.

Cheers

Hi,

I have just been through and tried a number of things within Indesign and nothing works. I think that as the text doesn't have any tags to identify the style associated with that particular piece of text, the computer simply reverts back to the bse style.
I have a feeling that xml will allow you to import and export text with tags to identify how the document should be displayed.

Hope this helps...

InDesign Help...

Linked text files
By default, text you place in InDesign is not linked to the original text file. However, if you select the Create Links When Placing Text And Spreadsheet Files preferences option before you place a file, the name of the text file appears in the Links palette. You can use the Links palette to update and manage the file. When you update a linked text file, any editing or formatting changes applied within InDesign are lost. Because of this risk, linked text files are not automatically updated when the original file is edited. However, you can easily update the linked file using the Links palette.

Have a look at Adobe InCopy, this will allow multiple users to update the one file.
