And which program would you suggest for making a brochure in?

One way is to make a box, copy it (as many times as you need "sides"), then with the alignment pallette, make sure they are all alligned horizontally, then distrubute spacing to zero.

Then select the boxes and resize the group to your paper size.
Keep them selected
Then go to View>Guides> Make guides.

OR you can use your calculator and just drag the guidelines to the needed measurement.

I would make the brochure in Quark or Indesign.

You could do it in Illustrator (I have), but with one document for each side.

Seamas is right on all counts.

Plus no matter what program you use, send a mock up showing how the back prints in relation to the front. If you don't, don't say I didn't tell you so.

Also, if you are making a trifold brochure, not all of the panes are the same size. The one that folds inside is smaller. Either get a template from your printer or search around here somewhere for the one Kool uploaded. It's probably in Resources somewhere. Morea the Librarian may come along later and point to it.

Everybody's right. And definitely get the panel sizes from your printer, what PD is talking about is that when paper folds, you have to factor in the weight of the paper and how that's going to impact on the fold. For example, try folding a piece of paper evenly over and over again. Eventually, you're going to lose dimensions on the panels as you fold. It's called "creep". So find out from your printer what all the panels need to measure for their "creep". It varies from paper stock weight etc.

InDesign (and Illy once you unlock guides) let you select guides as an executable object. So let's say you have a trifold, your printer says panel one needs to be 3-1/4, panel two, needs to be 3-3/16 etc. You can create a gide at zero on your page, then select that outermost guide, and move a copy of it to that exact amount specified for that panel by the printer. And so on.
