Recently discovered GDF. I think this is great. SPent four hours so far browsing around
er... introduction ey?
I posted most of the stuff in this entry somewhere else but, hey, i want at least one person to welcome me. :)
I live in the Philippines, first of all, and yes we do have graphic design (and designers) here. I'm also Japanese but have been living in the Philippines since birth. Not a lot of graphic design firms here though.
I worked for a french graphic design firm here in Manila for quite some time. Was an assistant graphic designer actually. Was exposed to wonderful clients like museums and high end restaurants. I ended up doing small chores for our star designers (plus cutting tons of paper). But i did get to dabble in logo making, printing, tons of menus, signage making, packaging (coffee and cement bags), invitations, and other stuff.
I quit because being a full time graphic designer in the Philippines can't pay the bills basically. Graphic design here isn't actually a clearly defined profession or industry. Most people here think it's a small department in advertising agencies. (they think it's a semi-skilled kind of job!)
Worked as a visual merchandising officer in a big retail company as well.
I am currently a travel agent for a big travel website currently (no design job there) where I can happily pay the bills i mentioned earlier.
I just do freelance work now and am currently doing some logos for several NGO's and recently got a job to do two websites and am still wondering if I should take on the crusade of preaching good design to somehow correct the maximalistic over indulged cultural aesthetic in terms of graphic design our society has here in this country.
Oh. and I'm 24 years old btw.
