Hello, everyone! I hope I'm posting this in the right forum.
I've recently gotten a contract to do some vector art for a client. I'm brand-new at digital art - I usually do traditional paintings. After taking on the assignment, the guy who is doing the Flash programming told me he can't use the art I'm giving him.
Here's my process: I draw my line art by hand, then scan it into photoshop. Then I import it into Illustrator CS2 and use the Live Trace function to convert it to a vector image. Then I clean it up and call that group "INK". I also remove all the white fills, so that I can put coloured shapes underneath the INK group, thereby colouring the image in.
This is the best way I have found to work, because I can draw art that is still relatively 'hand-done' looking, and has lots of linework. Drawing the image in Illustrator wouldn't look nearly as good and would take FOREVER. Most importantly, the process I use allows me to paint colour behind the image, without having to worry about the colour fills being contained within the ink lines (ie. if I were to use Live Paint).
-------------------
So - the Flash guy says that flash can't handle 'compound paths'. I looked at my vector art, and sure enough, it's full of them!
So here's what I'm hoping someone here can help me with: Surely there MUST be a way that Illustrator can take my compound path and just turn it into a simple shape! Or what about if I convert my compound paths into compound shapes? Are those compatible with Flash?
It's very important I figure this out...I've got about 30 illustrations to do and the clock is ticking...!
I appreciate any help in this matter.
You can grab a sample file of mine to have a look at how I did it, if that will help:
