I need to make a square edge
thanks
Just make a selection on the right edge of the image and free transform it with perspective to create the desired depth, add a drop shadow and Blammo! Bob's your mother's brother!

I think the 3D filter in illustrator CS can do that too.

Only if you use image mapping Cam. And the interface sux but it could probably do this simple effect. What's off in the posted example is the two sides have the same color values. Unless intentionally lit at a 45 to the corner in foreground. Odd choice.

You could also just cut the pic in the polygon shap giving the illustion of 3-D. Add a white blur line on the cornered edge and give the shap a drop shadow. Paste the image inside your polygon and behind the corner line. If you need to do a lot of images - a template could almost be made and you paste the image underneath your illusion of a 3-D box

The big American flag makes me think of last week's New Yorker cover. Anyone catch that one?

Photoshop:
-Add new Layer
-Put that layer under the image to be "boxed"
-Make canvas bigger for later use
Now, you got a few options on how to do it, but here is one of them:
-Select what will be th front of the box
-Ctrl-X (yes, a cut) then paste in front on new layer
-distort, just change the points on the side that will look smaller.
-Go back to previous layer, distort also
-select both layers and merge them
-add effects (in this case, a drop shadow)
Here is an example:

edit: I didn't do anything for the corner to have a glow, but it can be done ith the brush. BTW, this is one of the new vehicles used in the Canadian army. Cruisin in a Mercedes!

hi
thanks for the above image, that exactly what i am trying to do.
i am still struggling...
i select new layer, but when i select the front part of the image and do the ctrl X i keep getting the error message "could not complete the cut command as the selected area is empty.
i know i have fell at the first hurdle but i am newbie, but with a bit more instruction i should be able to do it.

You have to make sure you're on the image layer. No doubt the new (blank) layer is what you've got active. Since it's empty, that's why you're getting that message.

hi all
i have managed to get some sort of a box shape, but when i try to add a drop shadow it does not work.
It as though the canvas is the main image rather than the image on the canvas (if you get my drift)

also how do i get a smoother line, look above and see how jagged it is.
And one last question how do i put one of those faint lines on make the edge stand out
thanks

Where you currently have white needs to be transparent, in order for the drop shadow to be visible, if I'm understanding you correctly.
For the edge, use the burn tool, you'll have to experiment with the brush size and opacity a little, but just drag it straight down where you want the edge to be (by edge, I mean where the box turns the corner, so to speak).

Are you sure thar you're working on a floating image layer, and that the image layer isn't called 'Background'? If it is actually 'Background', just double click the layer name to convert it to a floating layer.
As for the degree of edge jagginess, and the drop shadow...
Just make your selection of the white area with whatever selection tool you want, invert the selection (shift-F7) then press the 'layer mask' icon. This creates a new greyscale mask that you can edit away on. Then click on the mask thumbnail itself (it appears beside the layer thumbnail) and add Gaussian blur to add smoothness to the edge. Probably in the sub-pixel range. To see the drop shadow you need to add something under it-- a new colour layer of white, then drag the whole layer below the image layer.
It's almost always a good idea to work with layer masks for transparent selections as it's non-destructive. If you don't like the selection, you can always rework it. No pixels in the image are ever actually removed.
