Hello!
Does anyone have any experience in the design & layout of a newspaper? I am starting to design/layout of one and am looking for any advice to avoid pitfalls etc. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

PJD - What kind of advice are you looking for? I have a great deal of experience in the field, as many of the GDF users... but it's very vague. Some questions to consider are:

Who will be reading your paper?
Who is it geared towards?
B&W or color?
Style guide... do you have one?

One quick thing that comes to mind is to get releases for the photos you print. You can look up some sample ones or create your own, but make sure it is worded correctly.

Feel free to shoot me any more questions.

grids, grids, grids and more grids.

search for newspaper grids or layout grids and baseline grids.

and make sure you use a layout programme like quark or indesign (they support multiple pages, style sheets, grids etc which again you should search for and understand because they make it all so much better)

do not use word, photoshop or illustrator.

Bear -
Thanks for the info. I had already planned on setting up my style guides in InDesign CS2. I am not a total beginner, but just trying to avoid some basic mistakes when printing. I will definitely check out a search for newspaper grids...thanks for the info!

Have you lined up a printer?
Your best bet is to talk to him.

The client is still deciding on one...until then my abilities are limited but when she finalizes one I will contact him to get his specs and all.
