I am a design student in the UK and next year have decided i might like to specialise in type, but first I feel I want to know a little more about it. Can anyone suggest a few good books to read, who out there is using type well or creating creat new typefaces? Are there any kind of famous agencies I should look into in the UK and even overseas? Are there any typography forums? Any information would be greatly appreciated or even if anyone just wants a chat about type
Thanks

Not sure what level you are at, but most overlook the basics which Eric Speikerman (Of Metadesign) outlines in his book 'Stop stealing Sheep and find out how type works'
Also see http://www.typophile.com
There are loads of reseources out there that our old mucka Google can find.
Learn the rules before you attempt to break em!

"The Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst is a must read for typography.

already half way through Stop Stealing Sheep and enjoying it. Just started the Phil Baines Type and Typography too.
Know the basic rules ie i know about ligatures, kerning tracking etc I just really want to get to grips with it now, so i can break the rules or even start designing my own typeface!
