Hello all...it's been a while since someone's tore my stuff up so I figured I'd post this ;)

My client has already approved it, but I wanted to run it through this gauntlet before I gave it my final okay.

Thanks in advance.

I'd lose the glow around the type.

I have tried to come up with different ways to lose it without losing legibility...I just can't come up with anything. In Design doesn't really have any other options for me to use...any ideas?

Just kill the glow and do a hard stroke instead. The glow doesn't really add to the legibility, for me, anyway.

thanks for the insight...I will try it and see...thanks for the quick response :)

If you do the stroke like you did with the white type, I think that'll be fine.

Also, you titled this as a Newspaper cover mockup, is it printing on newsprint stock?

It is printing on newsprint.

Do you know where you're getting it printed? Make sure to ask them about dot gain issues, newsprint is notorious for making things murky. Your cover looks like it's bound for trouble in that area.

Yes, I know where it's going to get printed. The gentleman told me just to make my images brighter (which I have done for this one already). I am going to send it to him so he can check it out and see if there is anything I need to alter.
Thanks for the headsup though.

how come you have different styles of alignment?

Well....one is the cover story (which typically gets special treatment, alignment and font size wise) and the rest are all aligned the same.

I was too busy staring at the slutty looking girl to notice anything wrong with the design. Look at this photo, there is absolutely nothing being implied here except "I want to have sex" Which, *suprise* works very well with the cover story title.

Even if you did make a few minor improvements, the vast majority of your audience isnt gonna care. Focus on making sure the photo prints out as best as possible on newsprint.

lol...thanks. That was the reason the image was used. I am sending it to the printer so he can do his thing and let me know how it turns out. I think worst case scenario is I have to adjust the image brightness etc.
Thanks for the post!

Okay, I guess I got all involved with the glow type, so now some design comments:

I would increase the size of the AEW acronym, and reduce the size of the type that spells out what the acronym means. Basically I think shoot for the acronym to be taking up about half again as much space as it is right now, and reduce the spell out type accordingly.

Even though you are trying to highlight the article as a cover story, I would still change it to flush left like the smaller articles. Bigger type definitely is enough to imply that it's a main feature, you don't need the different alignment, IMO.

The free issue stuff at the bottom could be a little bit smaller in my opinion as well. I understand that you're trying to highlight the first issue, but it seems to compete with the header type at the top.

Not sure about the choice of red for the article titles, I don't think I really care for it. You might have better readability with either a much darker red, or by keeping with a darker shade from the overall palette of the rest.
