Sorry if this question has been asked before but I am new to this forum. Is there an easy way to get around the forced trapping of black text that is within the bounding box of a drop shadowed graphic? I have created outlines to the text and that worked but I was hoping that there was another way.

Any of the prepress gurus know this one?

I tried duplicating what he/she's saying, but I couldn't get it to trap (spread) the black type when I put the black type on top of the drop-shadowed graphic. Unless I'm not duplicating the scenario correctly, which is possible. :)

Check your "trap styles pallet" window==trap styles. Open that pallet and select the type to see if a style is applied, if so, trash it. Also make sure you don't have a black outline applied to the text. In the preferences you can force the black text to overprint if you want.

When I check seperations in InDesign everything is fine. The black is overprinting. But the only way in InDesign you can see where the spreading will happen is if you use the Flattener Preview window and select transparent objects. This window highlights all the transparent objects in pink and in these regions is where my black text is spreading. All my transparency flattener settings are on set high. But I can really see the spreading when I check seperations on my platemaking system. Any ideas??? Could it be my settings for making a pdf?

It sounds like a transparency issue - try moving the text on a separate layer above the drop shadow - but you mentioned a pdf. If the pdf is placed in Indesign you amy not be able to do this.

I thought it was a Transparency issue too but all my setting are set at the highest resolution. I will try placing the text on another layer. The PDF is only created after all my pre-press work is completed and the PDF is only used to make my plates. Thanks again.

I have InDesign CS2. Thanks for the Info. I think I will probably have to call my support for my platemaking system.

Could quite well be an issue of eps or tiff or psd. The image that the type is on top of...what kind? There have forever been problems with type crossing over the edge of a graphic and spreading when it starts to see dots.

I think they have been either tiff or eps files. I understand that text needs to spread when it goes over a graphic but what is really strange is when the text is not even touching the graphic and is spreads. The text is spreading when it is in the area of the bounding box of the graphic. Weird and frustrating.

Dozer's got it. Any vector (including type) that gets too close to a ds, feather, or transparent object on the same layer, gets sucked into the flattener vortex. Putting the text on a top layer should fix all that.

^ ^ That's the ticket!
As soon as the text sees the bounding box, even empty, it spreads. Put the text on a different layer ABOVE the graphic.

i have had this happen when going to my harlequin rip running eztrap. the only way that i have been able to get around this is to either send the file as separations or to turn off the eztrap when sending as a composite for that file only.
