Ah the simple joys of dealing with idiots.

Recently I got a new printer. It's one of those all in one deals (printer, copier, scanner); my gf needed one for school, and I thought having a nicer printer would be good too. So, we went out and got an HP Photoprinter (I'd just gotten my digital camera too so why not).

Well we already brought it back to Staples because it wouldn't take in paper. It just kept saying there was none. So we got a new one (same model). I realised the other day that when I try to print from Adobe Illustrator or Indesign I couldn't change the paper type to Plain Paper; I could only use HP Photo Paper setting. So it prints super slow and the colours are off.

So today, I called Tech Support (after searching the site with no avail). First, they tell me my product isn't under warranty (even though I just got it) so I'll have to fax my PoP, and she can't help me. Well after I gave her the serial # it turns out it is under warranty (what were they basing it on before?).

Now the fun started, I told her the issue of the paper type and she told me that this printer doesn't accept certain sizes of paper...

"Sizes?" I said.

"Yes sir, it only accepts up to 8.5 x 14 paper."
So after re-explaining the issue to her (at length...twice) she grasped the problem.

"Which software are you experiencing this with sir?"

"Adobe Illustrator."

"Well the problem is we don't support third party software. You should be using our photoediting software for your needs." she actually sounds angry with me at this point.

"No offence," I chuckled "the Adobe software is far better." Not even bothering to mention that Illustrator isn't photoediting software.

"Well from what I've heard," She's definately mad now "it isn't! Our software should meet your full needs, and that's why you can't change the paper settings..."

I'm actually laughing now, "Well, okay then, thanks a lot." *click*

I couldn't believe it. I couldn't stop laughing either. She was actually mad at me for using Adobe software and an HP Printer. :D First thing I'm doing tomorrow is bringing this piece of junk back to Staples and getting a new NON-HP one.

What a joke.

Yep I'm intimately familiar with HPs fine help desk. My former computer was an HP Pavillian, by far the biggest peice of crap I have ever owned. Spent about 5 of the first 6 weeks I owned it on the phone with them and I can't recall a single problem they ever actually resolved. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

I always new HP stood for HUGE Problems. I went through the same thing with my brother. He wanted a camera and printer and I thought that because he was basically computer illeterate, HP would be right up his alley. Good lord, even HE was smarter than the HP tech people who, on two occasions I was there at his apt, they didn't even speak english!

Buy Epson, Mac.finn.

The crux of our company is selling and servicing HP hardware (mosltly printers, mfps, etc) But everyonce in a while our techs have to call the HP tech support for something and it doesn't take long until they realize that they know a lot more about the product and than they have to wait on hold forever as they are passed up to different levels... it's kinda crazy

Interresting, I have an HP Pavillion zd8000 Laptop and haven't had any problems. I also use the HP All In One 3310 with no problems. I've even done the wireless networking and all that jazz and I've had not one issue with either. I love the print quality and often change the paper size. I don't think I'd trade either one right now. Sorry to hear about your problems mac!

We have people here who are like that with our customers over the phone. It's sad, really. I never treat any of my callers like that, and I've been here for a year so it's not like I'd be burnt out (well...nevermind). I just don't get it. What's the point in treating people as though they're subhuman. Unless they absolutely deserve it, of course.
