I could'nt find the thread ....but recently there was a really good discussion on vector "art" in regards to this link....
http://www.techvector.com/
My workmate and I continued the discussion and felt that designer well verse in Illustrator could probably produce photo like quality tracings in a relatively fast time.
Well being the keaner do gooder my friend is....he whipped up this vector art image of his phone at home. 7 hours to complete. Now the image is much less complex than some of the images seen on the link above, but the principles in its creation could be re-apllied in any more complex artwork or tracing.
Anyways....wanted to show you his work!
Holy cow! I thought the first image was the reference photo. Your friend is very good.

Reuber, that post started up a bunch of great dialogue on process. I think you should resubscribe to it. It was some fascinating discussion, perhaps not what you expected, but good dialogue, nevertheless. IMO

CorelDraw has a very good third party plugin called EZ Metrics that is supposed to make isometric technical drawing very easy-- it comes loaded with this kind of clipart. Maybe there's something similar for AI out there?
Here's the EZ Metric page: http://www.unleash.com/ezmetrics/

Hi Broacher,
try this : isometric in illustrator (http://www.vektorthunder.com/tutorial-more.php?id=5_0_4_0_M) it's not much ... i hope you get the idea
yeah, cadtools (http://www.hotdoor.com/CADtools/) for illustrator is one of the best i've found, and such a bonus for designing furniture, vinyl, hoardings etc anything cos it's got all the measuring/scale tools to boot
well worth a look if you do alot of this sort of stuff

I am working on a Car right now whenever I get some downtime at work.
I'm going to check out those CAD tools, they look cool.
We (co-workers) were discussing the purposes that a photorealistic vector tracing might have and while driving home (stuck in traffic) last night I looked up at a BMW billboard and I took a real good look I would bet that its a vector image. Maybe not though, a company like BMW would probably have the cash for a 3d rendering so that they could view the car in any position.
Regardless, there is some demand for that kind of work, and I am willing to bet some good coin out of it. Alot of companies may not be able to afford the 3d rendering costs, however as I stated, an expert illustrator designer COULD pull it off at a much lesser cost (although I'm sure it still fills pockets).
Maybe that's why the guy's website (see start of thread) has some focus on the photorealistic quality vector files he's done.....that there is actually a strong enough demand that it can put some real coin in your pocket.
Good for thought.
