i recently just installed all of my pc fonts from work onto my dual g4 macat home...
i use Extensis Suitcase for my fonts, but i don't have anything organized into sets or anything yet... and i think all the fonts are currently being used.

photoshop will only displays A-S and nothing past that... anyone know the reason for this, is it cause there are too many fonts being used?

I would think so. How many fonts do you have activated?

X or 9.2?

PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

If you have 1000 active fonts on your system you need to shut off about 900 of them. Don't take them out of suitcase just deactivate them. That way you can turn them on when you need them and illustrator and quark will start them automaticly if they need to. I have 750 fonts in suitcase and about 60 or 70 active at any given time and never have any trouble.

I'm on PC, I have about 1000 fonts, only a couple hundred are active. I use Typograf as my font manager.

If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can avoid all together.

I have 1000's, but only keep about 50-75 active. I have a permanent set with about 30 that stays active all the time, and then several other sets that i temporarily activate when needed.

Very interesting post.

I've recently found that the Opera browser can take several minutes to load up with too many active system fonts (I currently have 2000+ active), but Adobe software only takes about 10 seconds to load up. Maybe I'll get a performance increase from learning to group fonts into sets too . . . thanks for the advice.

Yeah I have a font issue too.... I had about 3k, weeded 'em down as much as possible, but I finally quit after about page 200 w/ 30 or so on each page (I printed out myself a cheatsheet). I was using ATM and I am either a complete idiot when it came to that program or there was something freakishly wrong with it because everytime I would turn fonts on and off (activate/deactivate) it would mess up all my system fonts and things would all of a sudden be gibberish on my screen. So I've got one 'active' set now that's about 40-50 or so, plus the regular system fonts, but I'd love to be able to figure out a way to utilize some of those other fonts... In an ideal world, I would have them in different style sets, 'techy' ... 'westerny' ... 'futuristic' ... 'scripty' etc. but I just never got around to doing it... I did, at one time, turn them all on (3k something) and loaded up PS... took a few min, but worked like a charm! hehe. Illustrator, on the other hand, was a different story....

Having too many fonts will definitely affect your system. I unfortunately use Windows XP, and it would take about 3-5 minutes for Windows to load, because I had about 2000 fonts installed. Also, when I got Illustrator CS, it would load and then crash as soon as it tried to initialize the palettes. I got Adobe Type Manager to manage all these fonts and it fixed the problem.

Do a google search and find out which fonts are your system fonts, then put those in a set all by themselves and keep them active. Then, I suggest grouping your fonts into sets ( I have a pixel font set, a comic font set, etc), which you can activate and deactivate as you need to. I only wish that ATM had a better font preview than double clicking the font to see how it looks...
